  PRA presents Marcus Miller's Biography
Marcus Miller always knew that what older musicians said to him - about music, but mostly about life -- was of the greatest importance.
Miller decided he wanted his album, which follows his Grammy nominated 1993 PRA Records debut, "The Sun Don't Lie," to sound like a conversation between an older musician and a younger one, "but with me in between to translate," he says.
Marcus was born in Brooklyn on June 14, 1959 and was raised in Jamaica, NY on Long Island.

Marcus Miller was obviously the "boss" of the band, he introduced the band members and himself, a bit strange.
Miller, like last year when he performed at the NSJ with his own band, made full use of the lower dynamic range of the sound equipment at the Statenhal together with Gadd; sound quality was excellent as usual there (also handled Eric's acoustic guitars pretty well).
Marcus Miller thanked us all and said what a good time they`d had (incidently the way he introduces the band is standard practce in the jazz world).

Burke’s introduction to Miller came last year, when both were performing at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Theater, “the mother church of country music,” as part of the Americana Music Awards.
Miller subsequently visited Burke at home in Los Angeles last winter, when he was in town playing with Emmylou Harris.
Miller remains thrilled by the vitality of the sessions, and by Burke’s unpredictable explorations of this material.

 AN ANALYSIS
Marcus Aurelius said "The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane."
The original cast album is available (it was recorded after the show had already closed in 1964), and the CD reissue includes tracks not originally released on LP, including a longer "Cookie Chase" and "There Won't Be Trumpets" (which was cut in previews).
Though the 1995 recording is a more complete recording of the score, it is missing the joy and lunacy of the original cast album, so that many people having heard only the later version find the comedy a bit heavy.

A great keyboard album [this is the album in which he uses the Birotron, a Mellotron substitute he co-invented with David Biro -Ed.].
The album's highlight, for me at least, is the 13-minute closing track "...A Dance of Shadows" which slowly rumbles and evolves through melancholy themes, spooky Mellotron and theremin textures and a resonant open-string guitar arpeggio to twice resolve its tension into what is one of the most hauntingly beautiful vocal melodies I have ever heard.
Throughout the album the power of this music is in thoughtful, colourful arrangements and inspired performances that transcend the deceptively-simple structures and accessible melodies, and when all these elements click, the music is nothing short of magnificent; however, this is not everywhere, and some pieces could have been developed further.

The rest of the album can’t possibly reach that standard, but other than a typically dull drum solo (at the very end—you can just turn off the record early), this is a nice album, and some surprisingly heavy bits enter into the mix.
The album is pleasant and a few songs are excellent, but overall it’s hardly worthy of the awe it seems to inspire in some people.
This album was recorded in 1975, but it sure sounds like formative “new wave” to me. That’s a compliment, as Leland’s music has the same wild spirit and anything goes attitude of the earliest DIY punk records.

This was also about the time I became mature enough to understand the sophistication of the music that was characteristic of the fusion style, and I recall being both totally perplexed and in awe of the level of astounding talent that these players had achieved with their instruments as well as with their writing ability.
These wonderful art-covered albums, some with huge fold out posters inside, were very personal collections and we took them home like artwork and played them in a room, staring and soul searching at the four walls with nothing more than our creative imaginations for the most part.
Among them were drummer Omar Hakim, bassist Marcus Miller, guitarists Bobby Broom and Dave Moreno, horn players Dave Burnett and Ron Carter, Jr., and keyboardists Bernard Wright and Terry Burrus whom I knew coincidentally from earlier church days.

 Miles Beyond, Recommend
Dedicated to Duke Ellington, who died in 1974, the centerpiece of this album is undoubtedly the 32-minute epic "He Loved Him Madly," whose 'spacious quality,' became the benchmark to which Brian Eno frequently returned in his ambient experiments.
Combined with Marcus Miller's funky bass-lines, this resulted in strange but exhilerating 'chromatic funk.' In addition, the title track is a return to Miles's blues roots, while "U 'n' I" is a funky round with a child-like theme.
Again almost entirely composed by Marcus Miller (with some help from George Duke and John Bigham), this is the follow-up to Tutu.

For Lizz, such responses are welcome as she revealed when we talked prior to the album’s releases: “I like that people have to get into this record,” she states, calmly.
Busy with production and session work, Marcus didn’t focus on recording again as a soloist for a number of years: “It wasn’t till around 1990, 1991 that I felt I was ready to start making my own unique statement as an artist again,” he states.

I e-mailed Scott Miller - leader of the Loud Family, whose new album Days for Days is out now on Alias - at his day job, where he works on an object-oriented database product.

Miles Styles - The Music of Miles Davis
The Prestige quintet albums were recorded in Hackensack, New Jersey with engineer Rudy Van Gelder, with the bulk of the material coming from a marathon session on October 26, 1956.
The album begins with what is essentially an eighteen-minute jam over Tony Williams' high-hat work - nice work from all, but this is more of a meditation than a fully realized work; Shorter's soprano saxophone is the most interesting soloist here, although Miles' seems to be trying to turn his horn into an organ.
The album opens seemingly in mid-beat, with John McLaughlin banging away on guitar and either Billy Hart or Jack DeJohnette (or both!) hitting the snare hard between machine gun strikes on the top-hat.
