Memoirs Of Napoleon — Volume 11 by Louis Antoine Fauvelet de Bourrienne eBook by BookRags
On the 13th of march 1809 Gustavus Adolphus was arrested, and his uncle, the Duke of Sudermania, provisionally took the reins of Government.
After the death of the Prince Royal the Duke of Sudermania’s son, Count Wrede, a Swede, made the first overtures to Bernadotte, and announced to him the intention entertained at Stockholm of offering him the throne of Sweden.
It was very evident that the choice of Sweden was not very agreeable to Bonaparte, and though he afterwards disavowed any opposition to it, he made overtures to Stockholm, proposing that the crown of Sweden should be added to that of Denmark.

Carefully educated under the direction of Nils von Rosenstein, he grew up serious and, conscientious.
In August 1796 his uncle the regent Charles, duke of Sudermania, visited St Petersburg for the purpose of arranging a marriage between the young king and Catherine II.'s grand-daughter, the grand-duchess Alexandra.
The betrothal was actually fixed for the 22nd of September, when the whole arrangement foundered on the obstinate refusal of Gustavus to allow his destined bride liberty of worship according to the rites of the Greek Orthodox Church—a rebuff which undoubtedly accelerated the death of the Russian empress.

The Builder Magazine - August 1927
In 1778 the Duke of Sudermania, then G. of Sweden, was elected as its head and Gould says that it was probable that political motives were connected with his candidacy.
In April, 1781, the Duke of Sudermania resigned and Ferdinand of Brunswick was elected Grand Master in 1782, which office he held until his death, in 1792, at the age of 71, after which the Order disappeared.
All this was done, as it states in these Constitutions, for the purpose of preventing discords (such as the election of the Duke of Sudermania had caused) and the spread of innovations such as had been going on in neighboring kingdoms.

The Spinel Ruby and Balas Ruby   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
In connection with the oriental ruby two other productions of quite a different nature must be described, namely, the spinel ruby and the balas ruby.
The first is generally a very vivid poppy red; the second of a violet rose, or a vinegar rose; but there is no absolute rule for their colour, since Pegu furnishes white and violet-white spinels; and specimens have been brought from Aker in Sudermania which are of a bluish gray.
Spinels are brought also from Ceylon and other oriental countries; everywhere they are found in the beds of torrents, in the midst of alluvial deposits.

On the latter occasion he would have won a signal victory but for the unaccountable remissness of his second-in-command, Admiral Liljehorn.
On the death of Gustavus III, Charles, now duke of Sudermania, acted as regent of Sweden till 1796; but the real ruler of the country was the narrow-minded and vindictive Gustaf Adolf Reuterholm, whose mischievous influence over him was supreme.
These four years were perhaps the most miserable and degrading in Swedish history (an age of lead succeeding an age of gold, as it has well been called) and may be briefly described as alternations of fantastic jacobinism and ruthless despotism.

The History of the Thirty Years War - Book 1I
Headed by Charles, Duke of Sudermania, the third son of Gustavus, the Estates made a courageous resistance, which terminated, at last, in an open civil war between the uncle and nephew, and between the King and the people.
A general Diet ventured to abolish, in favour of the Protector, the rule of primogeniture which Gustavus had established in the succession, and placed the Duke of Sudermania on the throne, from which Sigismund, with his whole posterity, were solemnly excluded.
The son of the new king (who reigned under the name of Charles IX.) was Gustavus Adolphus, whom, as the son of a usurper, the adherents of Sigismund refused to recognize.
