he community that was to become Sudlersville took root in 1740 when Joseph Sudler, a Kent Island land owner, purchased 800 acres “south of the Chester River.” The land included the homestead known as Sledmore, which had been built in 1713.
Most likely his son Richard was the first Sudler to live there; he died in 1797 and was buried in the family graveyard.
That name was changed to Sudlersville in 1839.

He was a co-founder of the Maryland Historical Society in 1844 as well as a charter member of the Board of Trustees of the Peabody Institute in 1980.
He was a member of the Maryland lower House between 1751-54, and 1758-70; a member of the Council of Safety, 1775-76; a Signer of the Association of Freemen in 1775.
James Hollyday III, the son of Henry Hollyday of Ratcliff Manor (1758-1807) was a lawyer and an Associate Judge of the Circuit Court, composed of the Upper Eastern Shore Counties.

The coming of the railroad in 1869 brought the greatest growth to Sudlersville and much of the town’s history is preserved at the Sudersville Train Station Museum.
Baseball Hall of Fame member Jimmy Foxx, the Sudlersville Slugger, remains in the hearts of Sudlersville residents and it was appropriate that the heart of town was chosen as the site to commemorate the town’s most famous son with a life-size bronze statue.
Foxx was born in Sudlersville in 1907 and began his baseball career in Easton.

Not long after the Civil War, the Queen Anne’s and Kent Railroad laid track to Sudlersville’s doorstep heralding a period of growth.
By 1869 the railroad provided transportation not only to those who lived in and around rural Sudlersville, but it also provided a faster means of getting grains and produce to market.
By the time a new passenger station was built in 1885, the town had already doubled in size from 15 to 39 homes.
