Mid-1680's the work on Suecia made progress once again and by the end of the decade a number of plates depicting the Stockholm and Lake Mälaren region were added.
The drawings for Suecia antiqua et hodierna are kept at the Royal Library and not, as may be expected, with the collection of drawings at the National Museum.

He retired as Field Marshal in 1702, and died the following year.
Erik Dahlberg was responsible for the fine collection of drawings called "Suecia antiqua et hodierna[?]" (Stockholm, 1660-1716; 2nd edition, 1856; 3rd edition, 1864-1865), and assisted Samuel Pufendorf in his "Histoire de Charles X Gustave".
He wrote a memoir of his life (to be found in Svenska Bibliotek, 1757) and an account "Of the campaigns of Charles X".

They are from a large series of engravings collected by Erik Dahlberg in the middle of the 17th century and published after his death as Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna.
Meanwhile, he assembled a fine collection of drawings eventually published as Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna [Ancient and Modern Sweden] and assisted Samuel Pufendorf in his Histoire de Charles X Gustave.
He also wrote a memoir of his life and an account of the campaigns of Charles X. The work on the plates for Suecia progressed over several decades between 1668 and 1715, mainly executed by French and Dutch artists and engravers, who were more technically advanced than their Swedish counterparts.

This lovely oblong engraving was one of the illustrated plates included in Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna (Ancient and Modern Sweden) compiled by Count Erik Dahlberg at the end of the 17th century.
The author was a former soldier and engineer who served with honors and renown in the Swedish army.

The engraved plates of Suecia antiqva (original drawings by Dahlberg) were in stock for a long time, and to bind a copy of the Suecia was an examination for the master craftsman's diploma far into the 19th century among the bookbinders of Stockholm.
Through the bindings, it is possible to follow the changing fashions in materials and ornamentation, from the volumes in standing folio during the beginning and the middle of the 18th century to the normal oblong folio of later years.

Rudbeck sent a written account of this story to Field Marshall Erik Dahlberg, the man behind the large and imposing illustrated work Suecia antiqua et hodierna (Sweden ancient and modern).
A number of the copperplates in the Suecia work are adaptations of Rudbeck's written accounts to Dahlberg.
This contact with Dahlberg gave birth to a grandiose idea of Rudbeck's - to write a great work on Småland's ancient history.
