Suede (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Suede was one of the most popular and important bands in the UK in the 90s, and helped start the Britpop movement of the decade.
Suede was formed in London in 1989 by bassist Mat Osman, singer Brett Anderson and his girlfriend, Justine Frischmann, on rhythm guitar.
The album title, according to Anderson, refered to "a fresh start, a new band and a new fresh outlook" - the singer had been addicted to heroin and crack cocaine for a number of years by this time, which was having an increasingly deleterious effect on his health.

Though it couldn’t have been known at the time, the release of their debut is now recognized as a turning point in British music and marked the beginning of the Britpop movement which would dominate the island for the next few years.
Anderson and the rest of Suede (drummer Simon Gilbert, and bassist Mat Osman, at the time) completed the album and released it to the notable dismay of both critics and the publics (it is actually a great album and I might do a write up sometime).
On the contrary, this is a well-made pop-rock album which could serve to end his career at a high point (well, certainly not in a trough) or could open the door for great collaborations in the future for the duo.

This is Suede at their very best, a plucked acoustic riff and Brett's surprisingly rich tenor, joined by a string section, before Butler remembers to plug his electric guitar in, and the rest of the band come out of the shadows.
Though Suede recovered with a new guitarist and a decent album in `Coming Up', the record that almost destroyed them is decidedly more interesting in its breadth of ambition, which at times borders on pompousness but at others scales heights other bands can only dream about.

Like a call to arms to the emotionally dispossessed this album not only put a stiletto heel into the notion that there were no great bands anymore, but also exuded the kind of self-conscious Britishness that pre-figured the vibrant Britpop era.
But set against the context of today's drab indie-rock, Suede seems like a glorious vindiction of brutal, confused youth and the redemptive power of brilliant music: despite all the stardust and glitterballs there can be nothing more humane and honest than that.
The pairing of brett anderson and bernard butler produced suede's only truly great albums, this and dog man star are some of the most beautiful work to come out of the much maligned britpop period.
