The great mass of Egypt is located in Africa; the Sinai peninsula is the only portion situated in Asia and is separated from the rest of the country by the Suez Canal.
In the table entitled Dynasties of Ancient Egypt, the numbers of the dynasties are given in Roman numerals, and the numeral is followed by the dates of the dynasty and a notation of famous monarchs of the era (each of whom has a separate article in the encyclopedia).
Egypt's postwar policy was based on two principles: no direct negotiations with Israel and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 242, which, in part, called for the withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from occupied territories.

In 1858 La Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez (Universal Company of the Maritime Suez Canal) was formed with authority to cut a canal and to operate it for 99 years, after which ownership would return to the Egyptian government.
Egyptian nationalists demanded repeatedly that Britain evacuate the Suez Canal Zone, and in 1954 the two countries signed a seven-year agreement that superseded the 1936 treaty and provided for the gradual withdrawal of all British troops from the zone.

The Suez Canal (Arabic: قناة السويس, Qanā al-Suways), west of the Sinai Peninsula, is a 163-km-long (101 miles) and, at its narrowest point, 300-m-wide (984 ft) maritime canal in Egypt between Port Said (Būr Sa'īd) on the Mediterranean Sea, and Suez (al-Suways) on the Red Sea.
This caused Britain, France, and Israel to invade, in the week-long Suez Crisis of 1956.
Egypt's Suez Canal Authority (SCA) reported that in 2003 17,224 ships passed through the canal.

The head of Egypt’s environmental agency, Mohammed Sayyed Khalil, said Cairo wanted written proof that the decommissioned aircraft carrier was not carrying hazardous waste in violation of the Basel Convention banning such trade.
Khalil said that he had met on Thursday with Greenpeace’s spokesman in Cairo, Martin Besieux, but that Egypt’s decision to block the ship’s access was unrelated to the group’s campaign.
