Topic: Suffocation (band)

In the News (Tue 2 Dec 08)

Suffocation (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Suffocation, an American death metal band, fused the predominant rhythmic styles of early death metal and grindcore, with complex song structures to start a new subgenre of music, considered brutal death metal by some.
Suffocation is placed amongst peers such as Immolation, Incantation, and Morpheus (Descends) as being part of a genetic fragment of death metal known as "New York Death Metal", or "NYDM" for short.
Suffocation integrated death metal with the muffled strumming and downstroke rhythms of speed metal while introducing more complex rhythms, a variety of influences, and bizarre, mocking lead guitar.

Asphyxia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Asphyxia (from Greek a-, "without" and sphuxis, "pulse, heartbeat") is a condition of severely deficient supply of oxygen to the body that arises from being unable to breathe normally.
In an experiment where dogs were suffocated by placing an air-tight rubber mask over the dog's heads, it was shown that it took around 8 minutes for the dogs to go into cardiac arrest.
This can be contrasted with another experiment in dogs were suffocated by forcing them to breathe nitrogen, the dogs surviving only an average of 5 minutes.

 Suffocation - Percussive Death Metal
Suffocation meld the emotions of hardcore and extreme avantgarde metal into a contexture of intricate conflicting structures through absorption of both to the ultimate abstract at the same time they are rendered incarnate in pummeling, concrete, functional rhythms.
Suffocation integrated the heavier styles of death metal with the muffled strumming and downstroke rhythms of speed metal as did many bands innovating New York style death metal, but then integrated more complex rhythms with a variety of influences and bizarre, mocking lead guitar.
With Pierced From Within, Suffocation have returned from the abyss of popularity after their brilliant second album, Breeding the Spawn, was ignored by fans either for its lack of bass-heavy production (made famous by Suffocation's first album, Effigy of the Forgotten) or for the fans' pompous attitudes about death metal.

Suffocation integrated the heavier styles of death metal with the muffled strumming and downstroke rhythms of speed metal while introducing far more complex rhythms, a variety of influences, and bizarre, mocking lead guitar.
Suffocation’s approach was to meld the emotions of hardcore and extreme avantgarde metal into a contexture of intricate conflicting structures through absorption of both to form the ultimate in pummeling, concrete, functional rhythms.
SUFFOCATION confirmed their intentions soon afterwards and with a line-up of Mike Smith (drums), Terrance Hobbs (guitar), Guy Marchais (guitar), Frank Mullen (vocals), and Derek Boyer (bass), the band resumed writing and rehearsals and announced that they were back to stay and ready to deliver once again.

The Metal Web! - Suffocation Interview
With the band disbanding in 1998 due to “lots of battles within the band” as quoted by Terrance Hobbs (guitarist), what do you feel was the driving force behind your decision to call and resurrect the band for a new release after what seemed like a decade.
Some of these bands, when their away and get back together, the chemistry is not there and it falls apart.
That’s what Suffocation is. It’s being as brutal as we possibly can and doing it in a way that is technical, but you can listen to it and you can understand it.

As most bands of this genre insist of rehashing, recycling, and reproducing the same material time and time again with little or no conviction, Long Island, New York's SUFFOCATION have returned with the most extreme, and accomplished material to see the light of day.
The band states that the split was amicable and was to due a change in direction.
SUFFOCATION then headed over to Roadrunner Records where they would see the release of the now classic Effigy Of The Forgotten (1991), Breeding The Spawn (1993), and Pierced From Within (1995).

He was in the band when we were all deciding if Suffocation was something that was ever gonna be.
And being that we were the first band on their label, it's a relationship that we have that holds a lot of respect, and we don't have to tell each other what we've done for the past 15 years to get what we need today.

The band has not been the classic Countess we've all known for many years and despite a few enjoyable tracks that were released during the Barbarian Wrath era the band has simply been sub par as of late.
The band play as if there is no tomorrow (though I still prefer Barnes silly croak this Corpsegrinders as was a bit easier to hear what he was saying) and the tone on the guitars is quite brutal.
I am saddened to see the band fall like this, but it was obvious that without Barnes working the band in new directed as shown on "The Bleeding" that the band would lose much of their focus.

This band plays nu metal with the groove style and the blast beats, but is not so generic and cheezy as most bands doing this style.
The band still have that groove and the low vocals, but if your into that style I would say this band is better than a bunch of other bands doing this sort of thing.
This is like the other band on the label except this music is more trippy and while it wouldn't be something I would listen to on a regular basis, it would be enjoyable to listen to this while surfing the web or something.

The energy of the crowd was apparent and it translated to the bands as all of them gave very spirited, high octane performances; and why not considering it was a party of sorts to welcome the headliner back to the forefront of death metal.
Normally, with death metal bands, the beats are the same, the chords are annoyingly repetitive and the lyrics have no feeling.

In 1998, SUFFOCATION once again hooked up with legendary producer/engineer Scott Burns for the recording of the EP, 'Despise the Sun.' Released on micro-indie Vulture Records, 'Despise the Sun' contained SUFFOCATION’s most accomplished material to date, the band comfortable enough in their style to develop it to a muscular prime.

As a Suffocation album, STD isn’t in the league of the bands classic moments such as ‘Effigy of the Forgotten’ and ‘Pierced From Within’ (and I’m not sure we should have expected that either), nor is it a bag of crap either.
Not content to labelled or restricted by the sound of this EP the band switch and change from crunching riffs to soft and light, to brutal over the span of the six songs creating a very interesting and diverse context to their sound.

Formed in 1990, the band was among the first to incorporate the percussive styles of older death metal with varying beat structures and the ferocity of modern extreme metal to form an altogether ferocious sound that would be emulated and imitated the world over.
With a repertoire of songs that remain relevant as ever to the metal scene — and a work ethic virtually unmatched — Suffocation is a prime example of what good death metal should be.

Would it be safe to say that a talented band on a large label may not be appreciated as well by the purists, as if they were on a small label run in a German basement by some dude named "Hans"?
Although, many bands have failed or have become crappy after the signing to a larger label, I think the pressure to release material quickly and tour constantly fucks things up.
