The county seat is Riverhead, though most county offices are located in Hauppauge on the west side of the county where most of the population lives.
Suffolk and Nassau counties are generally referred to as Long Island by area residents (as distinct from Brooklyn and Queens, both physically on Long Island but part of New York City).
Suffolk County is home to numerous colleges and universities, including the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Dowling College, Southampton College, Saint Joseph's College and Suffolk County Community College.

This report presents case reports of four hypothermia-related deaths during January 1999--March 2000 in Suffolk County (1999 population: 1,383,847), the largest county in New York excluding New York City, and summarizes hypothermia-related deaths in the United States during 1979--1998.
Suffolk County ranked fifth among New York's 62 counties in number of hypothermia-related deaths for persons of all ages.
In addition, in New York and Suffolk County, hypothermia-related death rates increased by age category and were higher among men, similar to trends observed in the United States.

The consent decree, which still must be approved by a three judge federal court, requires that the county translate certain voting materials into Spanish, investigate and remove poll workers who have engaged in hostile treatment of Spanish-speaking or Hispanic voters, and train poll officials on the requirements of the Voting Rights Act.
In announcing this agreement, officials of the Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York said that they were encouraged by recent steps that Suffolk County has taken to address the issues identified in the lawsuit.
