The music was mostly a melodiless rip-off of "new Broadway" only thinly disguised by allegedly latin orchestrations, the lyrics were pedestrian through on occasion rippled with a clever turn of phrase, and the story was all over the place.
The music was quite good, with fresh elements and a strong melodic component, but the performances were not quite up to snuff, and the lyrics were stale and often trite.
A very traditional musical comedy, complete with ridiculous dance numbers, bad puns, silly sex jokes, total lack of warmth or real human drama, cheap rhymes, and a seriously derivative score, I felt like I was watching the Pajama Game or the Music Man with semi-nudity and adult themes.

Sugar was formed by Bob Mould in February, 1992 after sending David and Malcolm home-demo versions of his songs so they could familiarize themselves with the material.
Boston-based Malcolm Travis has had a long music career that began in 1979 with Human Sexual Response ("Jackie Onassis") and continued with the Zulus (whose album was produced by Bob Mould) and Concussion Ensemble (still alive and kicking, but without Malcolm, who withdrew because of the time demands of Sugar).
Sugar t-shirts have become elusive in the US and may all be out of print at this time.

So,how is Sugar different from Husker Du?For starters it's notably better produced than most of the Husker catalog and more pop oriented.There are obviously no Grant Hart songs to add some diversity and the rhythm section is less tight than in Mould's 80's band(it's basically Mould with a backing band).
Sugar's musical legacy will likely never be as timeless and indispensable as the Ramones or the Beatles.
Nonetheless, its music serves as a footnote to a sound that quietly influenced many well-known rock bands of the 1990's and early 21st century.
