Movie Review - Sugar Hill - Hollywood Bitchslap
And in 1994, when Leon Ichaso's Sugar Hill was released, you'd find at least ten mini-Scarfaces a year.
Sugar Hill came during this period, and it deserves a little more attention than the others, if only for its well-meaning (albeit painfully familiar) morality tale.
And while Sugar Hill boasts a hearty collection of excellent performances, those assets are nearly negated by a directorial style that can best be described as...languid.

Never Die Alone Movie Review at Hollywood Video
It's an all-too-familiar story that such films as New Jack City (1991) and Sugar Hill (1994) portray with greater skill than the heavy-handed Never Die Alone, which is now available on DVD.
A lurid fusion of film noir and urban "gangsta" drama clichés, Never Die Alone is a melodramatic potboiler from cinematographer/director Ernest Dickerson (Juice).
As with the groundbreaking Boyz N the Hood and director Ernest Dickerson's debut film, Juice, this ultra-violent film might not deter kids as well as, say, Scared Straight (which is hopelessly outdated anyway), but its message is clear: actions have consequences, and some actions can't be forgiven, at least in this lifetime.
