Sugar Ray is a band from Orange County, California.
Sugar Ray first became famous as mainstream music in the summer of 1997, with the incessant radio play of its song "Fly".
The album 14:59 was the comeback to these accusations, with the title implying that their fifteen minutes of fame were not quite up (ie, their clock reading 14:59).

I just visited the Sugar Ray message board on the official site, a lot people were having a discussion about the upcoming 2003 album, their messages were, I like to point out, very similar to the fans' reactions when Sugar Ray first put out 14:59.
Sugar Ray has created a niche for music fans who enjoy a little bit of hip hop, light-hearted, harmless pop and at the same time, true heavy alt/punk/metal rock fans at heart.
Maybe Sugar Ray is known for their catchy summer ballads, but I like them for their good humor, their varieties of styles, the fact that Sugar Ray is not just a alt.

Sugar Ray CD review on AudioRevolution.com
The image of Sugar Ray is that of five average guys who just happened to strike it big in pop music.
The album is steered away from meat-and-potatoes rock tedium by producer David Kahne, who adds a little pop radio friendliness to "When It’s Over" and "Ours," and by the hip-hop contributions of DJ Homicide, who lends a fl presence to this otherwise all-white group.
Sugar Ray love songs contain varying degrees of angst, but never enough to bring the party mood down – kind of the way somebody always changes the subject the moment it starts to get a little too serious in the boys locker room.

Sugar is the mentor but Mike set the pace instrumentally for what might arguably be the “best” band today.
Besides playing everything off their self titled new album and some from the “Rockin’ Sugar Daddy” album, Sugar reprised some older material that he had only released on 45’s including a version of “Frankie and Johnny” and Mike sang Bob Dylan’s “Master’s of War”.

Lots of '80s in Sugar Ray's new album
After the crunchy "Floored" (bouncy feel-good tune "Fly" was an anomaly on the album), it seemed Sugar Ray was noisily headed down the neo-thrash road.
From the Ramonesy "Aim for Me" to "Personal Space Invader" and "Burning Dog," both of which make you wonder whether Sugar Ray listened to an awful lot of Devo while writing "14:59," the new album is a potluck party of styles from a decade or more ago.
Unfortunately, Sugar Ray chose to re-create the original nearly note for note instead of injecting some of the energy and wit that filled the group's cover of Adam Ant's "Stand and Deliver" on "Floored."

The album closes out on a high note with "Disasterpiece" which is an energetic slice of pure classic rock: fast beat, great guitar riffs, and even a harmonica.
