The women Sughd were least tolerant of this behaviour as less than half of the communities thought a man was ever justified in hitting his wife as compared to 86% in Khatlon, 94% in DRD and all of the groups in GBAO.
By region, the most common illness in Sughd children were anaemia (36%), flu/cold (30%), and malnutrition while in DRD the most commonly reported childhood illnesses were diarrhoea (41%), flu/cold (38%) and typhoid (26%).
In the Sughd sample, the agricultural extension officer is from the Ministry of Agriculture in 47% of the communities.

Expected result 2: The knowledg e of local population in GBAO, Sughd, Khatlon and RRS on the prevention of water-borne diseases is increased by 30 per cent through the provision of health and hygiene activities carried out by RCST at the community level.
After heavy rainfalls in Penjikent district of Sughd province, the Red Crescent organised an emergency response to help affected population with safe drinking water and water purification tablets.

In the village, four women, who held certain positions in the hierarchy of the party, were arrested on 25 April, Varorud [reported] on 28 April.
This time, officers from the Tajik Interior Ministry's regional department for combating organized crime in Sughd Region detained two unemployed young women, 25 and 21, holding the positions of "masula" [female official] and "mushrif" [team leader], as well as a 67-year-old pensioner.

The Centre has been established by the OSCE Field Office in Khujand and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as well as by central and local environmental authorities, under a project financed by the United Nations Environment Programme, UNDP and the OSCE Environment and Security Initiative.
"The opening of the new Aarhus Centre is an important event in the Sughd region," said Abduvohid Karimov, Chairman of Tajikistan's State Committee on Environment and Forestry.
"The Sughd region is the only place in Tajikistan that has been contaminated by radioactive waste," said Saulius Smalys, Environmental Officer at the Centre in Dushanbe.

The project area is located in two oblasts; Khojabakirgan in Sughd Oblast, and Vakhsh and Kyzylsu-Yakhsu irrigation schemes in Khatlon Oblast.
The main thrust of the Project is rehabilitation of the selected irrigation and drainage facilities, which are in the critical state of disrepair, provision of associated farm production support services, and construction of another key infrastructure, rural water supply, in main cotton production regions of Sughd and Khatlon.
The three irrigation schemes of (i) Khojabakirgan irrigation system (Sughd region), (ii) Vakhsh irrigation system (Khalton region), and (iii) Kyzylsu-Yakhsu irrigation system (Khalton region), cover a total cultivated area of 85,000 hectare (ha) and nearly half million people depend on the provision of irrigation water for their livelihood.

Sughd Province stands first among the regions in the number of registered crimes related to trafficking in persons.
Sughd courts have convicted 25 persons of trafficking young women to other countries, 17 of them organizers of human-trafficking criminal groups, according to the prosecutor.
He said that victims usually did not pursue legal action against traffickers due to the social stigma attached to such victims.

His comments follow a recent meeting between himself and Abdullah Nuri, head of the Islamic Rebirth Party of Tajikistan, to discuss the complaints of Islamists about alleged harassment at the hands of government officials in the northern region.
Tensions in Sughd surfaced after a speech by Tajik President Emomali Rahmonov in July indicating the presence of Tajik prisoners among Taliban and Al-Qaeda detainees in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

DUSHANBE, April 28, 2006 (RFE/RL) - A court in Tajikistan's northern Sughd province today sentenced four alleged members of the outlawed Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir to jail terms of between five and 10 years.
The four were found guilty of inciting national and religious hatred and of calling for the violent overthrow of the country's constitutional order.
Court officials said this was the fourth trial this year of alleged Hizb ut-Tahrir members in Sughd.
