Suicide bombing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Suicide bombers often believe that their actions are in accordance with moral or social standards because they are aimed at fighting forces and conditions that they perceive as unjust.
A common reaction to a suicide bomber is to assume that he (or rarely she) was motivated by despair, and probably hailed from a poor, neglected segment of society.
The suicide missions, having killed hundreds and maimed thousands of Israelis, are believed by some to have brought on a move to the political right, increasing public support for hard-line policies towards the Palestinians, and a government headed by the former general, prime minister Ariel Sharon.

Explosive belt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
An explosive belt (also called suicide belt) is a vest packed with explosives (and often also with nails, screws, bolts and other objects to serve as shrapnel to maximize the number of casualties) and a detonator that is worn by suicide bombers.
Although it is actually a vest, covering the entire stomach and usually has shoulder straps, the explosive vest is popularly depicted as a thick belt with cartoon-like dynamite sticks tied to it, usually with a ticking clock on the side.
A common security drill against suspected suicide bombers is to isolate the suspect to at least 15 meters distance from people and ask him to remove his upper clothing (coat, shirt etc) in order to see if there is an explosive vest strapped under them.

ipedia.com: Suicide bombing Article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
A suicide bombing is a bomb attack on people or property, committed by a person who knows the explosion will cause his or her own death (see suicide).
The suicide bombers target mainly United States military targets although civilian targets such as Shiite mosques and international offices of the UN and the Red Cross were also attacked.
Suicide bombing may thus "work" as a military tactic (in that it costs fewer lives than any conventional miltary tactic or targeting soldiers rather than civilians) and may or may not achieve the political objectives sought by the combatant.

The U.S. Army Professional Writing Collection
Suicide bombers look forward to death because, as shuhada (singular shahid), or martyrs, they expect to be rewarded by Allah in paradise while they and their families gain social status within their societies.
A single suicide bomber may act individually against a target, two or three may coordinate the bombings, or a larger number of suicide bombers may participate, as exemplified by the 19 al Qaeda members who hijacked four U.S. airliners on 11 September 2001, coordinating their activities as part of a strike force against multiple targets.
Suicide bombers are blown to pieces with their heads (as in the case of wearing a bomb vest) typically being separated from their bodies.

Suicide bombing at US military base highlights security flaws
Investigators believe a suicide bomber was responsible for the blast at a crowded US military mess tent on Tuesday in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.
The explosion, which sent a fireball through the canvas roof of the tent, was initially believed to be the result of a direct hit by a mortar.
However, the lack of missile or artillery fragments and evidence of the type of shrapnel used in suicide belts led investigators to conclude that the attack was the work of a suicide bomber wearing an improvised explosive belt filled with ball-bearings.
