		The living will and the suicide note represent the light and the dark side, respectively, of the profound cultural ambivalence that exists in the USA between a belief in the sanctity of life, and the right to live life as freely as the constraints of a civilized society would permit.
		Equating a suicide note with a living will is ethically dangerous, and is likely to lead the public into unhealthy perceptions as to the role of physicians in society.
