So when I heard that Suikoden Tactics would be based off the world of Suikoden IV, acting as a prequel and epilogue to that title, it didn’t annoy me as much as it may have other reviewers; I was ready for a return to Suikoden IV’s world.
In the end, Suikoden Tactics is a mixed bag; highly appealing because of the depth of its characters, story and consequences, but disappointing in that it overlooks other Suikoden casts and tosses the 106 Stars of Destiny system by the wayside.
While tactics-style RPG fans and Suikoden series fans will find this title to be a must-have, more mainstream audiences will want to sample it via a GameFly rental before plopping down $50 for a full-on purchase.

Suikoden IV is set in and around an island archipelago, and places you as a young man who's about to graduate and become a knight.
The scenario writers, to their credit, have accomplished the difficult task of weaving together a large number of stories and subplots in an intelligent and enjoyable way, and the characters that traverse the various story strands are largely well-developed and free of the tired old clichés which infest many RPGs.
Later in the games, the battles take less time to pass, but they're no less tedious, because your now-powerful characters are now being interrupted in their quests by load delays for battles which don't even give you any XP worth a damn.
