Topic: Suio Ryu

Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo® - Bu Creates the Man
Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo was created by Mima Yoichizaemon, a man of the Warring States period.
It should be noted that as the Suio Ryu is a comprehensive tradition, at the discretion of Soke those who have achieved excellence in other arts can be recognized with one of the previously noted awards.
Katsuse Yoshimitsu is the 15th Soke of the Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo and 12th Soke of the Masaki Ryu, succeeding his father Katsuse Mitsuyasu in 1982.

Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo at AllExperts
Suio Ryū Iai Kenpo is a style of classical Japanese swordsmanship.
In the twentieth year of his training, he was struck with a vision of white gulls floating effortlessly and without conscious thought on the water, and named the style that arose from his revelation the "Suio Ryū", or Water-Gull style of swordsmanship.
The spiritual, philosophical aspects of his training are everywhere in the Suio Ryū techniques, and the core waza, or techniques, are tied to the Shinto cosmology that defines the heavens and earth.

Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo® USA Shibu
The emphasis of the Suio Ryu is practical application; although kata practice is the norm, every technique is intended to be delivered with full strength and intent, as if one were actually cutting against a live opponent.
In many ways, this is part of what makes the Suio Ryu unique, for most of the techniques that comprise a kata are meant to be paired against techniques from other waza so that their applications can be both understood and tested.
The Suio Ryu was brought to America thanks to the efforts of Kiyoshi Yamazaki, who met with Katsuse-sensei and arranged for several of his students to begin training in the Suio Ryu.

I met a Suio ryu teacher in Japan when I was learning MSR there by the name of Kadono (not sure his first name) in Chiba.
I saw him and his students demonstrate Suio ryu in a few taikai's and gradings and found it very interesting.
Under Katsuse Soke the Suio Ryu curriculum includes, among others, techniques of iaijutsu (sword drawing art), kumi iai (paired iai practice), kenpo (kenjutsu), naginatajutsu (halberd art), jojutsu (staff art), kogusoku (grappling), wakizashi (short sword techniques) and kusarigamma (sickle and chain).

Others, Shinkage Ryu in particular, use a fukuro shinai which is made of bamboo split into many pieces at the end and completely covered with leather.
In other words, what one ryu called kendo (or iaijutsu, or kenjutsu, or batto-jutsu) in the 15th century is not the same as what we call kendo today - it would have incorporated techniques of fencing, drawing and cutting, as no swordsman would be sufficiently trained without all three skills.
Only a handful of ryu are represented by the major organizations; thus the hundreds of traditional iai-jutsu ryu did not contribute to the foundation of iaido.

 IAIDO-L Archives -- October 1999 (#152)
Originally, Seigo-ryu was a jujutsu ryu (not ryuha) that was practised in the Owari han (domain).
It was a jujutsu ryu, but it also included iai (this'd be the Yagyu Seigo-ryu stuff) and hojojutsu (rope-tying, a common adjunct to jujutsu ryu).
There are forty techniques in the ryu, divided into a total of six sets, plus betsuden attached to several sets.

Note: all seated techniques may be performed standing, and Sekiguchi Sensei often likes to perform them in Hayanuki (fast draw) style, where all the techniques are performed rapidly, one after the other, as if one long pattern.
This set was created by Omori Rokuzaemon in the early eighteenth century, and studied by practitioners of the ryu until it was formally included in the style by Oe Sensei.
Bangai means 'not numbered' or 'out of sequence', so my translation of it as 'compilation' may be pushing things a little, however that would seem to be the sense in which Sensei uses the term.

 Kanai Sensei discusses Iaido
In other words, Iaido was an “Otome Ryu”, which means it was a style of martial arts hidden from the public, and teaching it was prohibited.
As late as the Meiji era, Eishin Ryu was still kept secret in the domain of Tosa, but became known to the public through the teaching of Hakudo Nakayama Sensei, who was Kiyoshi Nakakura’s teacher.
Muso Shinden Ryu is Tosa Iai, and I think I belong to the school or lineage of Hakudo Nakayaya Sensei, Haga Sensei and Nakakura Sensei.

 Yama Oroshi Iaido
Our School, or “ryu,” is comprised of seven sets of prearranged techniques called “waza” or “kata” depending on whether they are performed alone or with a partner.” Waza sets are arranged to form shoden (“initial-level”), Chuden (“Middle-level”), and okuden (“secret-level”).
One historian who specializes in iaido commented, “Tracing the lineage of iaido is akin to plotting the genealogy of an inbred hillbilly family.” [You probably ought to cite to this person’s published work.] Often the headmaster or one style would be the headmaster of two or three others simultaneously.
The important thing to remember is that the Muso Shinden Ryu should be honored and respected equally with the Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu.
