Sukagawa-shi (Sukagawa city) is located along the old Tohoku highway, Route 4, approximately 200 km north of Tokyo in the prefecture of Fukushima.
Located between Koriyama to the north and Shirakawa to the south, this small city is home to the original Sukagawa Aikido Club from which our Montreal based club grew.
Until recently the club was led by the 6th degree master Suzuki, Takashi shihan from Shirakawa-shi in Fukushima-ken. With his passing in September of 2000 the honor of leading the club was passed on to 5th dan Kashimura, Yoshinobu sensei.

Suzuki sensei, my friend Kashimura Yoshinobu sensei and all the members of both the Sukagawa and the Shirakawa Aikido Clubs opened their arms and their hearts to a young Canadian from Montreal who could not then speak a word of Japanese and could understand even less.
Under the watchful eye of Suzuki sensei I trained for three years in both the Sukagawa and Shirakawa dojos.
Sukagawa Aikido Club of Montreal was started in September of 1996 at St. Jude School in Greenfield Park.

It was she who directed us to the Kuroiso City Office to say goodbye to Dr Watanabe and be sent off with a very brief farewell speech by the City’s heavy smoking mayor.
An hour into the walk and I was joined by Dr Yoshida, as arranged at the previous nights dinner and we continued on together at a strong 7km/hour pace, stopping only for drinks at a small aid station prepared for us by the Shirakawa Doctors Association.

The Taimatsu Akashi Festival in Sukagawa was awesome.
All I know is it’s one of three major torch burning festivals here in Japan and this particular one celebrates the destruction of a shrine in Sukagawa several hundred years ago.
Cindy and I met in Koriyama on Friday and took the train to Sukagawa together.

We where watching a fireworks display in Sukagawa (Japan), when we saw this bright light.
At first i thought it was a star, but it started to get bigger.
