The Phoenix Hall at Uji and the symmetries of replication. (Buddhist temple) - The Art Bulletin - HighBeam Research   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Twelve visualizations follow by which the physical appearance of Sukhavati is described in hallucinatory detail, from its "trees of jewels, earth of jewels, lake of jewels" (342c10-11) to Amitabha himself, a golden colossus with "eyes like the four oceans, pale blue and clear" (343b17-20).
The remaining three visualizations address the nine grades of rebirth in Sukhavati, with emphasis on the type of persons qualified for each grade and the manner in which, at death, they are "welcomed" to the pure land.
In this sense the Phoenix Hall, surrounded by water and with a river flowing nearby, was at once a three-dimensional manifestation of the Visualization Sutra, a representation of Sukhavati, and the purified and purifying object of contemplation expounded in the Manual of Rituals.

 Sukhavativyuha Sutra
Those, on the contrary, who are filled with faith, and being free from doubt, amass a stock of merit in order to be born in the world Sukhavati, and conceive, believe, and trust in the perfect knowledge of the blessed Buddhas, they, being born miraculously, appear sitting cross-legged in the flowers of the lotus.
They are born in that world Sukhavati, through the hearing of Buddha's name, and through the serenity of thought only; they do not, however, appear sitting cross-legged in the flowers of the lotus, being born miraculously, but dwell only in the calyx of the lotus-flowers.
The praise of the beauty of the excellences of Sukhavati, the country of the blessed Amitabha, the Tathagata, the entry of the Bodhisattva on the stage of never returning, the story of Amitabha, the Mahayanasutra of the Description of Sukhavati is finished.

 Entangling Alliances: For and Against
If Sukhavati were an ordinary (i.e., statist) country, then the government rail systems of these other countries would call up the Sukhavati Department of Transportation and negotiate an agreement; but if there is no such department, all is not lost; for they can simply negotiate with individual rail companies in Sukhavati directly.
Sukhavati will obviously have open borders, and will not require passports of those entering the country; but most other countries, including those bordering Sukhavati, will continue to make passports a condition of entry (at least until libertarianism sweeps the world, at which point the concerns of this article will be moot anyway).
My own feeling is that the Sukhavati government should not serve as a lackey for statist regimes; if a foreign nation regards itself as having a claim against a resident of Sukhavati it should be required to prove its claim in court, under Sukhavati rules of justice.

One of the masters of Pure Land Buddhism shows how to have a vision of the Land of Sukhavati and its Buddha, Amitabha, by using the sutra as a manual of visualisation.
The scriptures of this school promise rebirth in that land to the devotees of that Buddha, this was considered an easier way to gain salvation in contrast with the arduous path of self-sacrifice.
He was an ascetic and serious meditator who followed the techniques of visualization explained in the Sutra on Visualizing Buddha Amitabha, and his commentary on this text was later considered to be his most outstanding work.

However, the influence of Nagarjuna's implacable doctrine was such that it brought pressure to bear on some exponents of the Pure Land doctrine who felt the need to reconcile the insights of the Madhyamika with their own tradition.
However, it will also be argued that there is a 'middle way' that envisages a non-dual ontological relationship between these two realms, i.e.

This is one of the names of a Buddha said to reside in a Buddha land to the West called Sukhavati ('Blissful'), which is described in several Sutras as a place to which virtuous disciples of Shakyamuni can be reborn.
These Sutras, as well as others such as the Aksobhya Buddha Sutra, served as the central scriptures for a populist practice intended for the lay Indian Buddhists incapable or uninterested in delving into the intricate philosophies and meditations of monastic Buddhism.
Pure lands are the subject of a genre of Mahayana scriptures, the most widely known being the Sutras discussion the pure land of the Buddha Amitabha, called Sukhavati ('Blissful').
