Sukhmani, as you may suspect, is a Sikh, a religion that isn't so common here in Tennessee, but is common in India, where it originated.
Sukhmani is also a conservative (of the libertarian sort) and he makes no qualms about that.
Sukhmani writes today that if anything, the Issues Committee's function at this University should be called into question and perhaps more alarming to some this incident has not been isolated.

Sukhmani himself is a libertarian, and all of those who were objecting were people who oppose speech codes in principle, but who thought this student had gone too far.

There is a long time "myth" propogated by the rara sahib Sants that Sri Sukhmani Sahib Gurbani has 24,000 akhars....and a human being breathes 24,000 times in 24 Hours...so ONE Path of Sukhmani Sahib makes safla 24 Hours and 24,000 swaass...
When this myth was propogated...no one bothered to actually count the akhaars in Sukhmani sahib....but now tih computers and word count just a click away...it has been verified that Sukhmani Sahib is FAR SHORT of the magical 24,000...
This time i beleive it "accidentally" slipped out in a sant "supporter"..and looking at the "replies" to this obviously open and shut case query..all i see are half truths, half replies...and a lot of slithering about on a slippery slope..

Knoxville, TN-- Sukhmani Singh Khalsa, a conservative columnist at the University of Tennessee, was the subject of radical religious and ideological descrimination from the taxpayer-funded Issues Committee while the administration did nothing to respond.
On November 13th Sukhmani published a column criticizing the campus Issues Committee for its institutional bias against conservatives and for using student activity money to promote anti-American speakers.
While their advisor, Edee Vaughan, knew of the slanderous violation of student conduct policies, neither she or anyone else on the committee spoke up until they were contacted by campus and local media.

Guru Arjan Dev (1563 - 1606), the third and youngest son of Guru Ram Das and the fifth Guru of the Sikhs is the author of a considerable part of the Gurubani or poetry in the Guru Granth Sahib.

One day Bhai Kartar Singh was reciting the Sukhmani, on hearing which Bhai Randhir Singh remarked, "There is devotion and eager thirst, but how sad that there is no aesthetic and spiritual flavour (Rasa) in this recitation." These words created a disturbing agony in the mind of Bhai Kartar Singh.
After his recitation was over, Bhai Sahib recited the first Shloka of the Sukhmani which was an indication that I should start reciting the Sukhmani.

Phagwara, Punjab (KP) - On September 18th, the three day all- India Sukhmani Sahib Samagam, which is held every year by the Sukhmani Sahib Seva Societies, celebrated its 32nd Birthday.
Giani Tarlochan Singh, Jathedhar Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib, addressed the Sangat, applauding the Seva by the Sukhmani Sahib Societies for doing 'parchar' of Sikh values and principals, and voicing great concern regarding the growing problem of drugs and apostacy.
