 The Sukhoi Su-25 "Frogfoot"
Sukhoi engineers could accommodate the request for more warload by scaling up the design, but supersonic performance was out of the question, though they were able increase its top speed.
The Sukhoi team was led by the bureau's Oleg Samolovich and worked from a general specification developed by I.V. Savchenko, commandant of the VVS (Soviet Air Force) air academy.
The flight was performed by Sukhoi OKB's chief test pilot, General Vladimir Ilyushin, one of the USSR's most prominent test pilots and by an irony son of Sergei Ilyushin, founder of the rival Ilyushin OKB.

Russian Aviation Page: Sukhoi S-37 Berkut (S-32)
Sukhoi's workhorse, basic Su-27 had been rebuild as the Su-30 interceptor, Su-33 carrier born fighter, Su-34 tactical bomber, Su-32FN ASW and coastal defence platform, Su-35 and Su-37 air-superiority fighters.
The S-37 is an internal Sukhoi OKB designation which is rationalized in terms of commonly used yet controversial indexing originated with Sukhoi Su-7 and Su-9 prototypes.
The Sukhoi's vision of fifth-generation fighter is considered a lower cost solution (in a ballpark of $40 mln) for the MFI requirement than officially cancelled article 1.42.

 Su-25, Su-28, Su-39 Frogfoot
Sukhoi lived long enough to see the mock-up of the aircraft for which he had fought, but died in 1973 before the prototypes were formally commissioned.
Sukhoi argued strongly that supersonic speed was unnecessary and would impose unacceptable penalties, but some air force officers, conditioned by their experience with Su-7s and MiG-21s, simply could not conceive that any aircraft could survive without supersonic capability.
Sukhoi realized that the aircraft would have to be produced on a shoestring budget, and that existing equipment, avionics and systems would have to be used wherever practical.

Sukhoi Su-25 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Su-25 was designed by Sukhoi as a result of studies in the late 1960s on an aircraft to fill the Shturmovik ground attack role (so-named after the famous Ilyushin Il-2 of World War II renown).
The Frogfoot is heavily armed, with a Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-30-2 30mm cannon and various air-to-ground munitions; it can carry more than 4,000 kg of weaponry in the ground-attack role.
It remains in service with Russia and the CIS, as well as a variety of export customers.

 Sukhoi Su-25
Sukhoi's political acumen continues to be displayed, the company having flown Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in both the Su-25 and Su-27 before he assumed the presidency.
This division is responsible for promotion and sales of Sukhoi light aircraft, such as the Su-29, Su-31, Su-38L and Su-49; and in 2000 was planning to provide funds to enable Su-29 and Su-31 production to be relocated to KAPO at Kazan from 2002.
Combined production stated by Sukhoi to exceed 1,000, of which more than 200 were exported and almost 300 are two-seat.

 MAKS 2005 highlights
Each day's show was started by a trio of Sukhoi Su-25 ground attack aircraft, which have the unfortunate NATO code name of "Frogfoot", which raises the question when there are more than one of whether they're "Frogfoots" or "Frogfeet".
It's interesting to see from this display just how much larger the Sukhois are than the MiGs, and interesting also to see the wingtip vortices which came off the MiGs during dives and tight turns, always a nice touch during a display, even if it is less desirable when in battle.
This photo was shot from the crowd side on Friday afternoon, from where you could see a tantalizing collection of MiG 25 Foxbats and other aircraft on the other side of the runway.

 Su-25 Frogfoot
Sukhoi was fooling with idea to make people pods as well, so that ground crew could have been transported along with aircraft, but for some reason (lack of enthusiasm from the ground crews?) it did not came through
Sukhoi figured that upon impact Stinger shreds the rear fuel tank which is located right above the jet exhaust.
Only 22 Su-25s were lost in nine(!) years of combat operations in Afghanistan.

 New Anti-Narcotic Roles for Peru's Sukhoi Su-25s
Eighteen heavily-armored Sukhoi Su-25 "Frogfoot" ground-attack aircraft operated by the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) are to reinforce national efforts against drug trafficking, according to President Alberto Fujimori.
At an FAP anniversary ceremony on Sunday, the President said that the Su-25s were acquired for use in the border conflict with Ecuador, ended by an October 1998 peace treaty.
These supplemented 45-50 Sukhoi Su-22M-2K/M-3 and two-seat Su-22 "Fitter" ground-attack fighters bought by Peru, among large quantities of other arms and equipment, from the former Soviet Union many years earlier.

Sukhoi Su-24 Fencer: Soviet Swept-wing Bomber (Aerofax) by Yefim Gordon
This, according to Tupolev, was easier and cheaper than the "clean sheet of paper" designs proposed by the rival Sukhoi and Myasischev bureaus.
For political reasons, Andrey Nikolayevich Tupolev presented the project as the Tu-22M; this was a trick intended to fool the Soviet government into thinking a considerable increase in capabilities could be obtained by a simple modification of the existing Tu-22 'Blinder'.

Su-25 celebrates quarter century of service
"SUKHOI'S Su-25 Frogfoot recently completed 25 years in service - a significant proportion of which has been in combat operations.
The combat record of the Su-25 is perhaps less glorious than is warranted by its 25 years of service.
The Su-25 is, however, uncompromisingly a warplane and its combat survivability and effectiveness in both theatres of operation recalls that of its 'shturmovik' predecessors."

 OFPN: SU
The Sukhoi Su-25 'Frogfoot' is the Russian equivalent of the American A-10.
It's more sturdy than the Su-17 - enough to survive light fire from anti-aircraft weaponry - yet is still capable of carrying a heavy bomb load.

 Revell 1/72 Sukhoi Su-25 Frogfoot
The Sukhoi Su-25 is generally regarded as the Russian equivalent of the Western A-10 Thunderbolt, although it more closely resembles the failed A-9 Avenger - the aircraft, the A-10 beat in the battlefield aircraft competition.
The Frogfoot has appeared in many versions since it was first spotted by the West in the early to mid-eighties and proved itself as an adversary not to be messed with in the Afghanistan war - teaming up very effectively with the Mi-24 Hind Helicopter.

The Sukhoi Su-25 Frogfoot is a dedicated ground attack aircraft, much like the American A-10 Thunderbolt II.
And even though it usually does not carry air-to-air missiles, it's 30mm cannon is quite deadly when used against your helicopter.
Its normal loadout is 4 AS-14 air-to-ground missiles (comparable to the American AGM-65 Maverick) and a slew of unguided rockets.

Israel’s Elbit Systems, which is now in the final stages of an upgrade program for the Romanian air force’s Mikoyan MiG-21, has become fully engaged in the modernization of another famous Russian fighter, the Sukhoi Su-25 (NATO codename Frogfoot).
Elbit’s partner on this venture is the TAM aircraft production plant in Tbilisi, Georgia, which was the main manufacturing complex for the Su-25 during the Soviet period, as well as being one of the production lines for two-seat trainer versions of the MiG-21.
