The inferior frontal gyrus (gyrus frontalis inferior; subfrontal gyre) lies below the inferior frontal sulcus, and extends forward from the lower part of the precentral sulcus; it is continuous with the lateral and posterior orbital gyri on the under surface of the lobe.
The medial orbital gyrus presents a well-marked antero-posterior sulcus, the olfactory sulcus, for the olfactory tract; the portion medial to this is named the straight gyrus, and is continuous with the superior frontal gyrus on the medial surface.
It lies between the cingulate sulcus and the supero-medial margin of the hemisphere.

The lateral surface is limited in front by the lateral part of the parietoöccipital fissure, and by a line carried from the end of this fissure to the preoccipital notch; it is traversed by the transverse occipital and the lateral occipital sulci.
The transverse occipital sulcus is continuous with the posterior end of the occipital ramus of the intraparietal sulcus, and runs across the upper part of the lobe, a short distance behind the parietoöccipital fissure.
The lateral occipital sulcus extends from behind forward, and divides the lateral surface of the occipital lobe into a superior and an inferior gyrus, which are continuous in front with the parietal and temporal lobes.

To minimize resection of white matter, it is preferable to dissect the sulcus that ends closest to the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle, which in most patients is the sulcus between the superior and middle temporal gyri.
When the bottom of the sulcus is encountered, the pia is cauterized and an ultrasonic aspirator is used at the 25% setting to perform a corticectomy and leukotomy necessary to enter the temporal horn.
If the anatomy of the mesiotemporal region is unfamiliar, cadaveric dissection should be considered to gain a clear understanding of the structures involved.

The term sulcus vocalis is used to describe a depression or groove in the surface of the vocal fold mucosa that typically is found on the leading edge of the vibratory surface.
The incidence of sulcus vocalis is impossible to determine because of the variation in presentation, etiology, and diagnosis.
Most cases of sulcus are undiagnosed because of subclinical symptoms, lack of awareness, and difficulty in identification because of the relative rarity of videostroboscopy.

The hind sulcus is considered the principal sulcus; from its position the length of the prozona and metazona are measured.

 Lecture 27. Gross anatomy brain
The principal sulci on the lateral surface of the hemisphere are the central sulcus, which divides the frontal from the parietal lobes, and the lateral (Sylvian) fissure which divides the temporal lobe from the fronto-parietal lobes.
Posterior parts of the parietal and temporal lobes are divided from the occipital lobe by an imaginary line drawn from the preoccipital notch on the basal surface of the hemisphere to the superior part of the parieto-occipital sulcus on the medial wall of the hemisphere.
Two other important sulci seen on the medial surface are the parieto-occipital sulcus, which forms the border between these lobes, and the calcarine sulcus which is a landmark for the primary visual cortex.

The parietal lobe is located posterior to the central sulcus and superior to the lateral fissure (see figure.
The somatic sensory area, located adjacent to the central sulcus, receives input from nerves that travel from sensory receptors in all parts of the body, through the spinal cord and brainstem, and into the cortex.
The somatic sensory area, like the primary motor area, is organized as a map of the body; nerves projecting from adjacent locations in the body tend to terminate near to each other in the cortex.

Position of the superior petrosal sulcus was superior and inferior to the bony Projection in 34 (77.3%) and 6 (13.6%) cases.
Among the 100-petromastoid parts of the temporal bones, the bony projection was present in 44 at the superior border of the petromastoid part of the temporal bone close to the upper part of the groove for the sigmoid sulcus.
Thus awareness of the presence of bony projection in close proximity to the superior petrosal and sigmoid sinus and knowledge about its incidence and size is imperative for the neurosurgeon and neurootologist to avoid neurological and vascular damage.
