Sulfur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sulfur is also used in batteries, detergents, the vulcanization of rubber, fungicides, and in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers.
This sulfuric acid is a component of acid rain, which lowers the pH of soil and freshwater bodies, resulting in substantial damage to the natural environment and chemical weathering of statues and architecture.
Sulfur mined in Alberta, prepared for shipment at Vancouver, B. Common naturally-occurring sulfur compounds include the metal sulfides, such as pyrite (iron sulfide), cinnabar (mercury sulfide), galena (lead sulfide), sphalerite (zinc sulfide) and stibnite (antimony sulfide); and the metal sulfates, such as gypsum (calcium sulfate), alunite (potassium aluminium sulfate), and barite (barium sulfate).

Sulfur hexafluoride - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sulfur hexafluoride (SF) is a gas whose molecules consist of one sulfur atom and six fluorine atoms.
However, because its mixing ratio in the atmosphere is lower than that of CO (about 0.005 ppm versus 365 ppm), its contribution to global warming is accordingly low.
Sulfur hexafluoride can affect the sound of a person's voice if it is inhaled in small quantities.

Online Publication - SIR 2004-5190 - USGS Water Resources of Maryland, Delaware, and D.C. Area (WRD MD-DE-DC)
Bromide and sulfur hexafluoride tracers (0.139 liter of solution containing 100,000 milligrams per liter of bromide ion and 23.3 milligrams per liter of sulfur hexafluoride) were co-injected and monitored to generate a dataset that could be used to evaluate solute transport in three dimensions.
During the tracer test, the fluorescein dye, bromide, and sulfur hexafluoride were transported predominantly in the upward direction, although all three tracers also moved outward in all directions from the injection point, and it is likely that some tracer mass moved beyond the lateral edges of the array.
The mass of bromide and sulfur hexafluoride tracers within the array was estimated from the mean concentrations during each of four major sampling episodes that took place between 103 and 375 days after tracer injection.

An especially instructive demonstration is to breathe a mixture of helium and sulfur hexafluoride in a proportion such that its density is close to the density of air.
Sulfur hexafluoride has the additional property that, since it is a high density gas, it tends to remain in the lungs for a long time, and thus the effect on the voice persists much longer.
Helium and sulfur hexafluoride are two of a very small number of gases with which this demonstration can be safely done.
