Sulfuryl fluoride. Comments on Dow's petition of February 7, 2002, for fluoride tolerances. Submitted to US EPA March ...
EPA noted in its September 5, 2001, risk assessment of sulfuryl fluoride that brain white matter was a major target in several of the animal studies (rats, dogs, rabbits, mice).
Before we turn to considering Dow's calculations about exposure to fluoride from the use of sulfuryl fluoride as a fumigant on foodstuffs it is important to stress that there is important evidence that indicates that a fair percentage of the children in the U.S. are already overexposed to fluoride.
Aggregate risk from exposure to sulfuryl fluoride would be minimal because of its rapid dissipation from any fumigated commodity and because it is not expected to be present at the time of food consumption.

 U.S. Patent: 5035877 - Non-ionic contrast media from ionic contrast media - July 30, 1991
Of particular interest is the use of thionyl chloride, where the thionyl chloride may be used as the solvent and be present in excess, usually at least about 1 to 4 molar excess and the reactant dissolved in the thionyl chloride.
The thionyl chloride and other incipient solvents may then be removed by evaporation and as appropriate azeotroping the residue to remove any residual thionyl chloride and the resulting product dissolved in an inert polar organic solvent, e.g., an ester, followed by washing with bicarbonate and drying the organic layer.
The amino compound may be ammonia or alkylamino of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, having from 0 to 3, usually from 0 to 2 hydroxy groups, which may be protected or unprotected, when protected, as ethers, particularly acetals or ketals, more particularly acetonide.

Comments submitted to ATSDR on the draft Toxicological Profile on Fluorides. Submitted by Ellen and Paul Connett, ...
While the latter two compounds may appear to go beyond the remit of the ATSDR report they do not, because sulfuryl fluoride, used as a fumigant rapidly hydrolyzes to free fluoride ion, and the toxicological discussions by the USEPA on this substance are nearly all based upon fluoride residues.
Firstly, Emsley showed in 1981 that the fluoride ion forms a strong hydrogen bond with the amide function which is the in the backbone of proteins and particularly important at their active sites, and could well explain fluoride’s ability to inhibit many enzymes.
Up to this time sulfuryl fluoride was used only as a structural fumigant, never on food, and thus several critical studies have not been performed.
