The Norwegian tanker, the Arendal, was detained by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency early yesterday after one of the marine authority’s surveyors found the defects in a main ballast tank during an inspection of the vessel.
A spokesman for the MCA said: "At about 1am this morning, the single-hulled oil tanker Arendal, loaded with 106,000 tonnes of crude oil, was detained at Sullom Voe in Shetland after deficiencies were found by a MCA surveyor during his inspection of the vessel.

With the coming of the oil terminal, the remains of the airbase were upgraded and modernised to create Scatsta Airport which is primarily used to service the terminal.

The 235-metre Norwegian tanker, the "Arandal", was loading at the Sullom Oil Voe terminal when the defect was discovered.
