  Archibald Prize - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The prize has historically attracted a good deal of controversy and several court cases; the most famous in 1943 when William Dobell's win was challenged because of claims it was a caricature rather than a painting.
Nora Heysen was the first woman to win the Archibald Prize, with a portrait of Madame Elink Schuurman, the wife of the Consul General for the Netherlands.
The Archibald is held at the same time as the Sulman prize, the Wynne prize, the recent Australian Photographic Portrait Prize and was held with the Dobell Prize before 2003.

Entry to the Prize requires the photographic portraits to have been taken in the 12 months prior to the closing date for entries, and entrants to be residents of Australia.
This annual prize, known formally as the John & Elizabeth Newham Pring Memorial Prize, is awarded to one of the entries submitted in the Wynne competition.

They are ostensibly prizes for genre painting – one the very loose “subject” prize, the other for landscape painting or sculpture [presumably because a sculpture is in the landscape] – and since they are usually judged by just one person, an artist, they are idiosyncratic and sometimes a lot of fun.
That’s not usually the case of course, with mainstream, middle of the road artists selecting mainstream, middle of the road finalists but at least the potential is there, and you’ve got to be hopeful.
Xu Wang should be happy he made it into the show at all, as the large painting is actually on a wall outside the room where the rest of the show is, and is sort of hanging off the end.

In 1935, the design was awarded the Sulman Prize for Architecture, the only Catholic church ever to receive such an award in Australia.
It is the only church that has ever won the Sulman Prize as a complete design, and it was one of the early winners of the Sulman Prize — and for that reason alone it’s important to Australians, let alone to Australian Catholics.
