The sultanate was founded in the 1457 (other sources claim earlier) and is believed by Muslim historians to have existed for a few centuries although most sources mention that the sultanate was conquered by the Spanish in the 17th century.
Sultan Qudarat eventually ceded Palawan to the Spanish in 1705.

In 2001 during the ceremony of reconfirmation of the Sultan of Sulu and North Borneo, the new flag with the royal symbols were flown in the ceremonial hall.
The personal standard of the Sultan similar to the Kuwait flag, is yellow and green with a white crescent and five stars of the same color, and the same size, arranged in a cross shape and a kris named "Kalis seko " with its tip that touch the fly of the flag.

The sons of the last sultan of Malacca established two sultanates elsewhere in the peninsula - the Sultanate of Perak to the north, and the Sultanate of Johor (originally a continuation of the old Malacca sultanate) to the south.
As part of its history, the Sultanate of Sulu was granted the territory as a prize for helping the Sultan of Brunei against his enemies, and from then on that part of Borneo is recognized as part of the Sultan of Sulu's sovereignty.
The Sultanate of Brunei, though initially expressing interest in joining the Federation, withdrew from the planned merger due to opposition from certain segments of the population as well as arguments over the payment of oil royalties.

Marcos and the Sultan trained muslim soldiers at corregidor for that particular secret operation but when the muslim soldiers found out that they will be attacking their fellow muslims in sabah, they didn't like the idea so Marcos had to exterminate them.
You know the Sultanate of Sulu is more interested in claiming Sabah than the Philippines so if Sabah is claimed by the Philippines, it will be an Autonomous Region like Sulu meaning that it will be completely controlled by Sulu not the Philippines but it is still part of the Philippines.

According to historian and Cagayan de Oro City Rep. Constantino Jaraula (LDP), Sabah was once part of the Sultanate of Brunei and was given as a prize to the Sultan of Sulu in gratitude for the latter’s help in quelling a rebellion on Sabah in 1704.
The Sultan of Sulu sent 1,200 Tausog warriors to Sabah to fight side by side with the Sultan of Brunei’s warriors.
Of the 1,200 warriors sent to the battlefield by the Sultan of Sabah, "only 600 returned alive and as a gesture of gratitude, the Sultan of Brunei yielded his rights over Sabah to the Sulu Sultanate," Jaraula said.

It has failed to consider the sentiments of a people who had an Islamic government of their own, before the concept of so-called democracy is being forced or rammed down the throats of the Tausogs and other natives in the archipelago.
As a student of history, it is quite unbelievable that the Philippine Government has ignored the Sultanate of Sulu.
