The ice edge and fast ice on the southern edge of this polynya are situated over the continental shelf, one of the few place in our study area with ice-covered shelf habitats, due to this year's sea ice distribution.
There is a strong trend toward lower zooplankton and krill biomass on the shelf compared to the pelagic zone, and perhaps a slight trend toward lower krill and zooplankton biomass in the eastern region of the shelf compared to the western region in our sampling area.

The Ross Sea continental shelf west of Cape Colbeck and the Edward VII Peninsula in western Marie Byrd Land was investigated using marine geophysics during cruise 9601 of the RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer.
Minor west tilting of the shelf during the Late Cenozoic was the result of continued subsidence of the continental shelf along with possible uplift of western Marie Byrd Land associated with the Marie Byrd Land dome to the east.
Modern ice near most of these troughs is not thick enough for ice to ground at their deepest points by simple lowering of sea level.

 SCAR » Report 13
The overall theme of the meeting was, primarily, the coordination of ice radar sounding surveys of the grounding zone of the entire Antarctic Ice Sheet, and secondarily, the coordination of surface mass balance measurements and surface ice velocities.
Ice-thickness measurements were also made by Swedish glaciologists along Bailey Ice Stream during the Nor-wegian expedition of Dr M Kristensen in 1992, in the vicinity of the grounding zone of the Filcher Ice Shelf.
Establishing velocities of glaciers, ice streams, ice sheets, and ice shelves is essential to calculate the discharge of the mass balance equation.

The potential sea-level rise after melting of the entire Antarctic ice sheet is estimated to be 65 m to 73 m.
In spite of its importance, the mass balance (the net volumetric gain or loss) of the Antarctic ice sheet is poorly known; it is not known whether the ice sheet is growing or shrinking.
As a result, measurement of changes in the Antarctic ice sheet was given a very high priority in recommendations by the Polar Research Board of the National Research Council (1986), by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) (1989), and by the National Science Foundation's (1990) Division of Polar Programs.

The near-future impact of the ice sheet on global sea level is largely due to processes internal to the movement of the ice sheet, and not so much to the threat of a possible greenhouse warming.
Last week's dramatic demise of the Larsen B ice shelf in Antarctica has been embraced by environmentalists and commentators who warn of human-induced "global warming." After all, the ice shelf was 200 meters thick, with a surface area three times the size of Hong Kong.

Ocean tides play a significant role in the complex interactions between the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice and floating glacial ice shelves.
