NHK and other broadcasters have proposed a Sumida Tower which, if completed, would be the tallest freestanding tower in the world and the tallest man-made structure in Japan.

Perry Takeo Sumida was born in Honolulu on January 25, 1909, the son of Shinsuke and Kame (Otomori) Sumida.
From 1942 to 1943 Dr. Sumida spent 15 months at the Colorado River Relocation Center at Poston, Arizona.* Poston General Hospital, located on the Indian Reservation, was organized by six Nisei (second generation) doctors, four of whom came from Hawaii, who were sent to the Center before the rest of the internees arrived.
Sumida did not accompany her husband to Poston since she was about to have their first baby, who was born in White Memorial Medical Center.
