Instead, his attitude and focus gradually transformed the ASG as it lost its ideological direction and subsequently deteriorated into nothing more than a band of brigands who are contented with the ransom money they receive from their victims.

ARMY soldiers from the 18th Infantry Battalion rescued a 14-year-old girl from the clutches of her captors, who are suspected Abu Sayyaf kidnapers, Friday at Barangay Baiwas, Sumisip, Basilan.
When army troops scoured the out-lying village of Baiwas in search of the girl, they stumbled on the hideout of the kidnapers, who, upon sensing the troop's arrival, made their hasty escape and left the girl behind in their abandoned safe house.
The girl identified her abductors as Hasim Alias Sakasmar, Konori Lumbalan alias Missle, and Hajim Bariliu, who the military suspected were members of the Abu Sayyaf kidnap band in the area.

Sapantun claimed that during the AFP operation last August 22 which resulted in the evacuation of several communities in Sumisip town, an MILF camp called Camp Samir was overrun by AFP troops for the first time since it was established in the 1970s during the time of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).
Sapantun further cited the Sumisip board resolution requesting the military to conduct military operations in Sumisip to prevent the MILF camp from expanding like Camp Abu Bakkar in Maguindanao.

Notorious Abu Sayyaf leader Abu Sabaya and several of his followers have escaped a tight military cordon in Basilan and fled to the island of Jolo, in the southern Philippines, said a source.
Sabaya is understood to have left them behind in Basilan, in the hands of Abu Sayyaf commanders, Bacal and Sahinon Ispilon, the brothers of rebel leader Isnilon Hapilon in central Sumisip town, Basilan, said the same source.
Bacal has been planning to invite foreign television journalists to interview them and the hostages in exchange for 20 bags of rice and unspecified amount of money as payment for 'right of safe passage' to their jungle hideout in Basilan, the source said.
