  Summation Notation
Often mathematical formulae require the addition of many variables Summation or sigma notation is a convenient and simple form of shorthand used to give a concise expression for a sum of the values of a variable.
A typical element of the sequence which is being summed appears to the right of the summation sign.
The variable of summation is represented by an index which is placed beneath the summation sign.

Decision Point ®: About McClellan Oscillator & Summation Index   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The McClellan Oscillator and Summation Index are a breadth-based indicator, which means it is derived from the daily advances minus declines on the New York Stock Exchange.
When the Summation Index moves below the Zero Line it is an extremely negative sign for the market and indicates that a long-term down trend is in progress and is likely to become more severe; however, it is also likely that a significant market bottom is a few weeks or months away.
The McClellans have determined that the +1000 level is the neutral value for the Summation Index, which is the reason for the "1000" in the formula.

Temporal summation is the convergence of many rapid-firing signals from a single synapse onto the postsynaptic axon hillock--the part of the axon closest to the cell body.
Spacial summation is the simultaneous convergence of one signal from several different synapses onto the axon hillock of a single postsynaptic neuron.
Summation is the addition of a set of numbers; the result is their sum.

In 1969, Sherman and Marian McClellan developed the McClellan Oscillator and its companion tool the McClellan Summation Index to gain an advantage in selecting the better times to enter and exit the stock market.
When outside these levels, the Summation Index indicates that an unusual condition is taking place in the market.
Among the most significant indications given by the Summation Index are the identification of the end of a bear market and the confirmation of a new bull market.

 Dr. Dobb's | Floating-point Summation | April 15, 2003
The summation of large quantities of floating-point numbers is a simple task that arises frequently in practical applications.
With summation, one of the operands is always the sum so far, and in general it is much larger than the numbers being added to it.
But in some applications the summation would be the last operation performed on the array and so the same storage could be reused for the sorted array or the pairwise partial sums.

7.1 - Sequences and Summation Notation
Summation is something that is done quite often in mathematics, and there is a symbol that means summation.
k=1 is the lower limit of the summation and k=n (although the k is only written once) is the upper limit of the summation.
What the summation notation means is to evaluate the argument of the summation for every value of the index between the lower limit and upper limit (inclusively) and then add the results together.

 S-K Inst. Tylerlab: Probability Summation
The summation effects (dotted line) are controlled by the change in the ß of the Weibull approximation as uncertainty is reduced by increasing stimulus area; as seen at the left of the plot, the summation effects are of negligible size when uncertainty is high.
The dashed curve shows the summation effects expected of an ideal observer with a limited attention field, i.e., the ability to attend to a linear summing area matched in size and position to the stimulus for every stimulus size, up to some maximum designated as the size of the attention field.
I conclude that, since probability summation does not seem to be operating under these conditions, it is unlikely that it is a strategy that is available to the human observer.

Dispersion in Chromatography Columns: Summation of Variances
It is not possible to sum the band widths (standard deviation or (s)) resulting from each individual dispersion process to obtain the final band width, but it is possible to sum all the respective variances.
However, the summation of all the variances resulting from each process is only possible if each process is non-interacting and random in nature.
That is to say, the extent to which one dispersion process progresses is independent of the development and progress of any other dispersion process.
