Toyotomi Hideyori, the son and successor of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, was in Osaka Castle with 113,000 men.
On January 22, the Winter Siege was ended, with Toyotomi Hideyori pledging to not rise in rebellion, and allowing his moat to be filled in.
The smaller force led directly by Hideyori sallied forth from Osaka Castle too late, and was chased right back into the castle by the advancing enemies; there was no time to set up a proper defense of the castle, and it was soon ablaze, and being pummeled by artillery fire.

Checking up the ground plan of the Honmaru(bailey), the size of the Honmaru was almost the same as that of the present bailey, but the location and the height of the Tenshukaku in those days was situated to the northeast and 20meters lower than that of the bailey in the Tokugawa era.
The Osaka Castle including a moat and a stone-wall that we can see now was constructed in the era of Edo to show off the authority of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Osaka Municipal Museum was lined with it and both of them hold special exhibitions in Spring and Autumn.

 The End Game
As a gesture to end the siege, Lord Tokugawa offered to conclude an armistice, allowing that Hideyori would remain in possession of Osaka Castle and Tokugawa would withdraw his armies, provided the Toyotomi faction would allow him to destroy some of the Osaka fortifications and that no rebellion would be staged in the future.
The Summer Siege, or Natsu no Jin, began in late April with a series of ambush attacks against advanced Eastern Army units en route to Osaka.
From Osaka Castle, Mori Katsunaga and Sanada Yukimura arrayed 12,000 warriors in a new battle line along the northern bank of the Yamato River.

After the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 over Ishida Mitsunari, Ieyasu became the undisputed ruler and received the title of Seii Taishogun and established the Tokugawa or Edo shogunate in 1603.
Eventually Ieyasu detroyed the Toyotomi in the Summer Siege of Osaka in 1615 to finally bring peace to Japan.
