Summer of Sam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Summer of Sam is a 1999 film about the Son of Sam serial murders.
It is the story of a group of people in New York City (particularly the Throgs Neck/Country Club section of the Bronx) in the summer of 1977, a time in which the headlines were dominated by the Son of Sam serial killer case.
While the Son of Sam is terrorizing New York City, fear-driven residents of a small Italian-American neighborhood start pointing fingers at anyone who doesn't fit in the crowd as suspects.

Samhain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Its meaning is glossed as "summer's end", and the frequent spelling with f suggests analysis by popular etymology as sam "summer" and fuin "sunset, end".
Old Irish sam "summer" is from PIE *semo-, cognates are Welsh haf, Breton hañv, Old Norse language sumar all meaning "summer", and Sanskrit sáma "season".
Giamonios, the beginning of the summer season, is clearly related to the word for winter, PIE *g'hei-men- (Latin hiems, Slavic zima, Greek kheimon, Hittite gimmanza), c.

Summer of Sam Movie Review by Anthony Leong   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
As the long hot summer progresses, the city of New York is on the verge of exploding from the tension.
Although "Summer of Sam" effectively captures the essence of the Seventies and provides an interesting commentary on the moral depravity that is endemic to modern society, there are a number of weaknesses in the script that prevent it from becoming a truly well-crafted film.
It was a time when America was in transition between the high-rolling hyperinflation of the Seventies and the harsh recession of the early Eighties, between the happy-go-lucky dancehall beats of disco and the rise of the cheerless punk movement, and between the age of free love and the age of AIDS.

Rather than follow this summer from the killer’s point of view or even the victim’s point of view, Lee takes a very novel approach, he looks at the community that the killer frequented and how the residents of that neighborhood were affected.
Typical of a Spike Lee Joint, Summer of Sam is full of side stories that add to the three dimensional feel of the characters and that gives this fine cast of actors and excellent writers something to work with.
Summer of Sam is up there with ‘He’s Got Game’ and Malcolm-X. It is more than a montage of sights and sounds of NYC in the summer of ’77, it is an explosion of the emotion that gripped the city during that summer.

Summer of Sam doesn't chronicle the killer as much as the times: the blistering hot summer of 1977 when the Big Apple's psyche was taken hostage by the lone gunman.
The vigilante theme is depicted brilliantly, tying into the background of the Son of Sam killer, the heatwave and the movement of disco, drugs and punk...This is not about the Son of Sam killer, he is just a peripheral character and a cause of much of the paranoia.
Summer Of Sam takes a different route, instead of the usual routines of either a film focused primarily on the killer and his crimes or someone's investigation and efforts to catch him this film revolves around the people affected by the events surrounding them.

Summer Of Sam - Movie Review
"Summer of Sam," Lee's ode to the panic that struck the New York boroughs during David Berkowitz's 1977 Son of Sam killing rampage, lumbers like a Cadillac with a flat tire stuck in first gear.
"Summer of Sam" has some very strong moments, especially in the way it depicts the tension that weighs on the entire city of New York during this killer's random rampage.
If I had to say something nice about "Summer of Sam," it would be that it has a soundtrack so well assembled that even Chic and ABBA sound cool in context with Barry White, The Who, Marvin Gaye and Talking Heads.

Parents of Son of Sam's victims as well as the still-incarcerated murderer himself (real name David Berkowitz, who pleaded guilty in 1978 to six killings) have complained about having those long-ago horrors exploited on film, but "Summer of Sam" is not really about the killings per se.
To tell this larger story, "Summer of Sam" concentrates on a staunchly Italian American neighborhood in the Bronx where some of the killings took place and more particularly on two couples united by the close friendship between the men in each.
All these crises get heightened and intensified because of the pressures and paranoia caused by the Son of Sam murders, which so terrifies the neighborhood that the discos stand empty and women rush to dye their hair blond when the rumor circulates that the killer is partial to brunets.

In the summer of '77, I was 11 years old and living in upper New York state, but I still vividly recall the newscasts announcing that serial killer David Berkowitz had finally been collared by New York's finest.
Son of Sam's arrest ended a long string of 72-point headlines that emblazoned the front page of the newspapers I delivered after school, banal in their smudgy gray type but brutal in the paranoiac, siege-like messages they carried from The City.
It's too ambitious, I think, and certainly too long by a reel or two, but Summer of Sam is nonetheless an intelligent, viscerally kinetic throw-down, a jolt of pure adrenalized Spike that holds more than a few touches of genius in its overripe storyline.
