SUMMIT township was organized in 1854, its territory being taken principally from Butler and Clearfield townships, but including also portions of Donegal and Centre townships.
In 1860, six years after the township was organized, the population was 939; in 1870, 1,304; in 1880, 1,266, and in 1890, 1,287.
Butler county owes the establishment of this Monastery to the Bismarckian persecution of the Catholic orders.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older.
It was in Saxonburg, Butler County, that the designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, John Roebling, invented his revolutionary "wire rope." At what is now known as Oil Creek, Butler County resident William Smith and Edwin Drake first proved that oil counld be tapped from underground for consistent supply.

J.H. Butler was elected burgess in 1882, receiving the total vote, 216; Philo Ackley, in 1883; L.D. Langmade, in 1884, with W.W. Penhollow, justice; E.J. Fitzsimmons, in 1885-86; Philo Ackley, in 1887, with A.M. Kleckner, justice, and T.T. Mapes, in 1888-89.
Ernest Leopold was reared in Erie county, receiving a common-school education, and followed farming until 1869, when he went to Venango county and engaged in drilling wells; he remained there four years, and then went to Clarion county, where he stayed three years.
Sage was reared in Broome county, and received an ordinary education, after which he learned the carpenter’s trade, which he followed until April, 1876, when he came to McKean county, and worked at building oil rigs, or derricks, also at tool dressing and drilling.

Bowlders of large size are often found in the drift; granite, gneiss, greenstone from New York or Canada, mixed with limestone, sandstone, shale, pieces of coal, and an abundance of bluish-white clay.
Under lie the Shenango shales and flagstone 45`; the Shenango sandstone (Sub-Olean flat pebble conglomerate of McKean county) with nodular iron ore and fish remains, 15`; and the Crawford shales, 90` of which are visible in the north-western corner of the county.

 Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General
According to the criminal charges, Tanner was paid by service stations and auto wrecking shops in Butler, Mercer and Armstrong counties to handle the disposal of waste tires from their businesses.  Tanner allegedly dumped the tires on private property throughout the area rather than take them to a licensed disposal site.
The case will be prosecuted in Butler County by Deputy Attorney General Andrew Thiros of the Attorney General's Environmental Crimes Section.
Corbett noted that Tanner is also the subject of a May 2006 court order in Butler County to remove waste tires from locations where they were illegally dumped and make arrangements to transport them to a licensed disposal facility.
