SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, Somerset County (June 4, 1999) -- On behalf of Gov. Tom Ridge, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Secretary John C. Oliver today announced more than $1.23 million in grants for the planning, acquisition and construction of more than 109 miles of rail-trails in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania is the top state in the nation for the number of rail-trails with 105 open trails.
Somerset County, $50,000 for the refurbishment of the 460-foot-long Casselman River bridge in Confluence and Addison Township.

Jacob W. PECK, a successful farmer of Summit township, Somerset county, and a minister of the German Baptist Brethren church, descends from one of the old families of the county.
He has been director of the poor for Somerset County and was president of the board that erected the building for the insane.
For fifteen years he was auditor of Summit Township, and is one of the present board of supervisors.

She was born in Somerset County, Pa., and died in 1849 in Summit Town­ship, that county.
From there he went to Pennsylvania and was a pioneer of Elk Lick Township, Somerset.County, buying a tract of timber land from the Government and clearing a farm from the forests primeval, on which he dwelt until death closed his mortal career.

Uriah LANDIS, one of the enterprising and successful businessmen of Somerset, a son of Jefferson and Isabel (BERKEY) LANDIS, and grandson of Abraham LANDIS, was born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, January 3, 1858.
He was the first justice of the peace in Summit Township and served in that capacity for 14 years, and during this period never had a case reversed by the courts.

Pennsylvania's vast network of trails is about to get bigger with the announcement of more than $1.23 million in grants for the planning, acquisition and construction of more than 109 miles of rail-trails in the Commonwealth.
Located in Southwestern Pennsylvania and Western Maryland, the Allegheny Trail Alliance system is a key component of the developing 400-mile Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. trail.
Warren County, $24,200 to develop plans and to construct 0.7 mile of trail and to study the feasibility of extending the Warren Bike/Hike Trail.

The Township staff realized there existed a wealth of historical information that was contained in the recollections of it's older citizens.
With modern surveying methods, Franklin Township was actually determined to be 5.22 miles from east to west and 5.52 miles north to south, consisting of 18441.8 acres.
The Township is high, rolling land with a few ravines and broken ridges which prevail in similar summit townships.

 Mt. Davis Pennsylvania
It was Governor Martin G. Brumbaugh who, during one of his visits to the country (about 1914), first referred to Somerset County as the "Roof Garden of Pennsylvania." In 1921 the U. Geological Survey established the fact the crest of Negro Mountain is 3,213 feet above sea level.
Under the leadership of Col. Henry W. Shoemaker, well known historian of Pennsylvania folk lore and publisher of the Altoona Tribune, the Alpine club planned a pilgrimage to the summit to assist in naming it and dedicating it as the highest point.
A party of hikers from Somerset went by early train to Markleton and from there hiked it to the Peck farm to join the ascent of the Alpine Club.

My field mapping in 1990 for a UPJ geology class has proven that the DVL outcrops along what is now the Allegheny Highlands Trail, three miles(4.8Km.) west of Garrett, Somerset County, Pa. The DVL at this location rests directly on top of the Mississippian Loyalhanna Formation and is overlain by the Mauch Chunk Clastic Interval.
