Summit Tunnel at Donner Pass, Central Pacific Railroad, 1999
Opened on November 30, 1867, after two years of blasting, the 1,659 foot long Summit Tunnel (#6) at Donner Pass was used continuously for 130 years by the trains of the Central Pacific, Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, and AMTRAK.
Originally a tunnel (#7), the SP removed its top at some point only to discover that it needed to be covered again to keep the tracks clear of snow.
The tunnels and walls were built with Chinese labor, as was most of the CPRR.

Historical Research in the Loma Prieta Area
The Wrights tunnel is an abandoned railroad tunnel that crosses the San Andreas fault in the southern Santa Cruz Mountains in the vicinity of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, that was damaged and deformed during the 1906 earthquake.
This indicates that in 1906 the Summit Ridge fractures were a surficial phenomenon, not a reflection of tectonic faulting.
No large fractures occurred across Summit Road near the intersection of Loma Prieta Avenue in 1989, nor was any fracture in the immediate vicinity this large (the photographs and reports suggest about 1 m of vertical displacement, and several decimeters of extension in 1906).

 Next stop — Tunnel 13 - May 9, 2004
After battling a tunnel fire that began Nov. 17, then removing huge timbers and tons of rock and dirt from the collapsed sections, construction crews expect to reopen it early in June.
Built in the 1880s under the Siskiyou Summit, the tunnel made history on Oct. 11, 1923, when 23-year-old twins Ray and Roy D’Autremont and their teenage brother Hugh attempted to rob a Southern Pacific Railroad train near the south entrance.
The tunnel’s closure caused a delay in lumber and other freight deliveries that had to be rerouted between Weed, Calif., and Eugene.

Lapal Tunnel - a brief history   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Construction of the tunnel proved quite difficult, primarily because of mistakes with levels and the soft running sand, and involved the boring of 30 shafts, just one of which survived to serve the tunnel as a vent shaft.
Since there was no towpath, passage took up to 4 hours and was achieved by boats being 'legged' through the tunnel; the tunnel having been designed just for this type of transit.
Throughout the tunnel's operational life, it is known that several repairs were carried out and so it is a distinct possibility that new sections were constructed at more ample heights than the original bore.

By contrast, the claim is made by Hobbs and Summit that Joanie (not her real name), a 13-year-old former McMartin student, guided the tunnel diggers and even anticipated discovery of underground artifacts or points of interest that Hobbs claims were actually excavated in the alleged tunnel.
For example, Hobbs and Summit claim that Joanie anticipated an underground pipe that she said she would sometimes swing on as she passed through the tunnel.
Summit's arch also changes from "chipped" in 1990 and 1993 to "worn smooth, in contrast to the adjacent ragged contours and texture assumed by concrete poured into an earth bottomed trench."

The park was closed weekdays for a month from Sept. 22 to Oct. 16 to protect public safety during installation of lights in the spiral staircase of the Fire Control Building and in the tunnel, both located on the upper part of the summit trail.
However, because the installation of the lights in the tunnel and spiral staircase required the closure of the park, the project was put on hold until the fall, when visitor use of the park decreases after the high visitation during the summer months.
This engineering accomplishment involved the construction of the trail to the summit, a 225-foot long tunnel through one of the interior ridges of the crater, and the building of a 4-story camouflaged structure at the summit (761 feet above sea level).
