Topic: Summum bonum

 [No title]
The Epicurean maintained that happiness was the whole summum bonum, and virtue only the form of the maxim for its pursuit; viz., the rational use of the means for attaining it.
In the summum bonum which is practical for us, i.e., to be realized by our will, virtue and happiness are thought as necessarily combined, so that the one cannot be assumed by pure practical reason without the other also being attached to it.
They thus, in fact, left out the second element of the summum bonum namely, personal happiness, placing it solely in action and satisfaction with one's own personal worth, thus including it in the consciousness of being morally minded, in which they Might have been sufficiently refuted by the voice of their own nature.

Thus, as the Emperor Constantine signals the official acceptance of God as summum bonum, so the French Revolution is the date of the official acceptance of a new summum bonum—a human one in place of God—namely, the Nation.
A clear indication of the prevailing summum bonum at any given time is seen in the negative: as long as God is summum bonum, the severest judgment falls on heresy or that collaboration with the devil called witchcraft.
In Germany the Social Democratic Party clung to the Fatherland as summum bonum and to the reforms (on the Social Democratic model), and so ceased to be "Socialist" in the sense of Totalitarian.

 Kant on Summum Bonum
In his Critique of Practical Reason, for instance, Immanuel Kant employs the concept of the summum bonum (the supreme or highest good) to establish, or prove, the immortality of the soul, on the one hand, and the existence of God, as Creator, on the other.
Kant then argues that a "second element" of the summum bonum exists as "happiness proportioned to that morality," where morality is necessarily defined as the "first element" of the highest good.
Kant, in virtually everything he says about the summum bonum, without ever going so far as to claim that man can, or should, aspire to "become like God," nevertheless grounds his moral philosophy in essentially the same terms when he says that "The only objects of practical reason are therefore those of good and evil.

They are honored, their help sought in prayer, offerings are brought to them, but they are not themselves the summum bonum for Man. The summum bonum was in antiquity the Polis [city-state] and later perhaps the Roman state, but the gods were an other-worldly superhuman society of immortals, a kind of heavenly aristocracy.

 Dialectic of Pure Reason
The realization of the summum bonum ["highest good"] in the world is the necessary object of a will determinable by the moral law.
The doctrine of Christianity,[2] even if we do not yet consider it as a religious doctrine, gives, touching this point, a conception of the summum bonum (the kingdom of God), which alone satisfies the strictest demand of practical reason.
For we cannot conceive the action of this goodness (in respect of the happiness of rational beings) as suitable to the highest original good, except under the restrictive conditions of harmony with the holiness[3] of his will.

If, however, we abandon intuitional ethics, it is reasonable to argue that the term summum bonum ceases to have any real significance inasmuch as actions are not intrinsically good or bad, while the complete sceptic strives after no systematic ideal.

A source for Robert Fludd's sevenfold rose
The rose symbol from the titlepage of Robert Fludd's Summum Bonum, published at Frankfurt in 1629, has become well known as a Rosicrucian symbol.
It has a sevenfold symmetry, seven layers of petals and its stem is formed in the shape of a cross.
This shows very clearly that Merian and the publishers of Fludd's book, while drawing on symbolism from the emblem tradition, nevertheless intended to give this symbol definite and unambiguous Rosicrucian associations.
