Archaeological evidence in Sumner County indicates occupation by Paleoindian, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian cultures in the deep past.
With the exception of a two-year agricultural depression (1821-23) and cholera epidemics in 1849 and 1852, the first half of the nineteenth century was a period of growth, development, and recognition for Sumner County.
Sumner Countians, historically united in war, furnished 821 men to Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812, three companies to the Seminole War of 1836, and three to the Mexican War.

In honor of Charles Sumner, the distinguished Massachusetts Senator.  In 1854 he was a leader in the opposition to extension of slavery into Kansas, as proposed in the Bill to organize the territory.
Early interest in the county was driven by the economic oppportunities offered by the herds of cattle coming up the Chisholm trail from Texas.
The Kansas State Historical Society also has more historical data for Sumner County online including a rich bibliography and lists of cemeteries, post offices, and newspapers.

She was born 18 Nov 1876 in McPherson Co., Kansas, and died in Aug 1920 in Wellington of TB.
He was listed in the 1920 census as living in Sumner County but I don't have a town or township that he may have lived in, I also don't know if he was living in Sumner Co when he died.
The Kansas Dept. of Health could not locate her death certificate but family members are certain she died in Kansas either Wichita (Sedgwick Co.) or Belle Plaine (Sumner Co.).

Born Dec. 27, 1905 in Ellis County, she was the daughter of John and Anna (Rasmussen) Byers.

 May 29 2004 Harper/Sumner County Kansas Tornado Outbreak
The Storm Prediction Center had a High Risk of Tornadoes for the central plains and this was going to be my last chase day for this 2004 trip so I had high hopes for the forecast...I was not disappointed.
Unfortunately, this was the same county that was hit by multiple tornadoes back on May 12th.
It crossed the road just ahead of our position at the Sumner County line.
