  Sumo Wrestling
Sumo appears in the earliest histories of Japan, the Nihon Shoki and the Kojiki, and in early Shinto.
In the Edo period, sumo became a popular feature of urban culture among the merchant class and it emerged as a professional sport with rules and ceremonies which are closely related to today's.
The rules of sumo are majestically simple: one of the two wrestlers loses when he is forced out of the wrestling ring which measures about 15 feet in diameter or if anything other than his feet touch the playing surface.

Sumo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sumo tradition is very ancient, and even today the sport includes many ritual elements, such as the use of salt for purification, from the days Sumo was used in the Shinto religion.
These events are mostly for show and to publicize the sport, as sumo has so far been unable to take root in other countries; however, foreigners have been inspired to try their hand at it in places as far away as Eastern Europe and Argentina.
The issue came to a head when Fusae Ota, the female prefectural governor of Osaka repeatedly challenged the Sumo Association's policy by requesting that she be allowed to fulfill the Osaka governor's traditional role of presenting the Governor's Prize to the winner of the Osaka tournament, which would require her to enter the ring.

The History and Traditions of Sumo
Sumo as part of Shinto ritual dates as far back as the Tumulus period (250-552), but it wasn't until the 17th century that it began adopting the intense purification rituals that we see in sumo today.
Up through the early 20th century, there were only two basho a year; however, as sumo's popularity grew, the number of major tournaments increased to four basho a year and then in 1958, the current six-basho-a-year format was established.
Another fascinating aspect of sumo are the daily practice sessions (called keiko) just prior to and during the major tournaments.

In conclusion, it should suffice to say that sumo must be considered without giving aesthetic consideration to the professionals' fat, which does not afford as eye-pleasing a sight as that of the athletes in our Western colleges.
In training camps, sumo provides training in hand-to-hand fighting, is more easily understood by the uninitiated than kendo or judo, and is a more popular bodybuilder than Swedish calisthenics.
