Sun Microsystems Tuesday said it will not support chips from Intel with the release of its Solaris 9 operating system this year, as the hardware maker looks to cut costs in a tough economic climate.
Sun decided the costs of support, such as bug tracking and software patches, for Solaris 9 running on Intel was not worth the cost to the company.
Sun gave developers their first peak at Solaris 9 in October and will unveil the second iteration of this early access program next week, Lovell said.

Sun's long-term strategy for the next-generation of its servers will now center around Rock, which was unveiled at an analyst meeting in February (see story).
Sun hasn't given a date for Rock's arrival, but analysts expect Sun to soldier on for at least two to three years with the recently released UltraSparc IV as its flagship processor for its high-end servers before Rock is ready for release.
Sun will make improvements to the UltraSparc IV over the next few years and plans to shift engineers from the UltraSparc V project to the Rock and Niagara projects in hopes of speeding up the chips' development, Guttman said.

Sun unveiled a few design features of the MAJC at the Hot Chips forum in Palo Alto, California, an annual symposium where some of the brightest semiconductor engineers gather each year to discuss the latest advances in silicon.
Sun hopes the architecture, called Microprocessor Architecture for Java Computing (MAJC), will soon be used to make chips for use in TV set-top boxes that access the Internet and in mobile computers, games, video used in TVs for image conferencing and graphics and other newly-developing appliances, Russ Castronovo, Sun's public relations manager said today.
Sun is hoping that the introduction of the chip and the increased use of Java-based appliances will increase the attractiveness of other Java-based products sold by the company, Castronovo said.
