The forests of the Sunabeda Sanctuary are sparsely populated, a rarity in today’s India, and the region has thus far escaped the attentions of Orissa’s notorious timber mafia.
Sunabeda assumes even more importance when one considers that it is contiguous with the Udanti and Sitanadi forests in Chattisgarh state to the west.
Please write a letter asking that the Sunabeda-Khariar forests of Orissa be protected and that the proposal for their inclusion under Project Tiger be sent without further delay to the Project Tiger Directorate in New Delhi.

Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary in Nuapada District is located near border with Chhattisgarh on the western fringe of Orissa.
This is a 600 sq km sanctuary of dry deciduous forests.
Considered to be an ideal habitat for Barasingha, this sanctuary is inhabited by tiger, leopard, hyena, barking deer, chital, gaur, sambar deer, sloth bear, and varieties of birds such as hill myna, pea fowl, partridge and a number of reptilian species.

The Orissa government had proposed to bring the Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary in western Orissa, bordering Chhattisgarh, and Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary, along the Mahanadi river in the central region, under the Project Tiger coverage.
Mohanty said funds already available with the government for the sanctuaries were not being spent while the establishment of new reserves in Sunabeda and Satkosia would require displacement of over 30,000 people from those forests.
"Sunabeda alone harbours about 36 royal Bengal tigers which is even more than many Project Tiger areas," Patnaik said adding Satkosia had 18 tigers on the last count.

In the first such killing of a senior official by suspected Naxalites, Deputy Inspector General Jaswinder Singh was today shot dead by unidentified persons at a village in Maoist-infested Rayagada district of south Orissa.
Jaswinder Singh, DIG (south western range), was on his way from Sunabeda to Padmapur in the district when the incident occurred at Guma village, official sources said.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 4 (PTI) The number of Royal Bengal tigers in Orissa, which had dwindled to 166 in 2000, has risen marginally to 173 as per the findings of the census conducted during 2002, Forest minister, Bijoyshree Routray told the state assembly today.
Routray said while there were 142 tigers in the state in 1972, the number rose to 173 in 1979, 202 in 1984 and 226 in 1993.
The minister said the tiger population had been declining due to the shrinking habitat as forests were getting denuded.

 Downpour disrupts PM's Orissa tour
Dr Singh had been scheduled to fly by helicopter to Tusra in Bolangir district and then visit Sunabeda area of Koraput in the impoverished Korapur-Bolangir-Kalahandi region before leaving for Visakhapatnam in the afternoon.
He is now expected to fly to Visakhapatnam in his special aircraft at around 10.15 am.
The prime minister will wait there and fly in a chopper to Sunabeda if the weather improved.
