Sunbeam's first car, built in 1899, was powered by a single cylinder 5 h.p.
The car was in action during the 2001 Star rally, which was held at the museum.
Initially Sunbeam purchased the complete car minus the body and slowly purchased less and less of the car until only the engine, gearbox and sub-frame were imported.

Sunbeam started in 1899 as tin-plate maker John Marston created prototypes in Wolverhampton (UK), but the first Sunbeam cars to be shown to the general public were sold for £130 starting in 1901, as the result of a partnership with Maxwell Maberly-Smith.
However, the Sunbeam ti was a stripped-out special, and made little sense as a road car, thanks to its noise, harshness and tempermental nature, especially in town driving.
The cars were then shipped to Lotus at Hethel in Norfolk for the installation of its engine and ZF gearbox, before being shipped to the Stoke works in Coventry for final pre-delivery inspections.

The Chrysler Sunbeam was a small supermini 3-door hatchback manufactured by Chrysler Europe at the former Rootes Group factory in Linwood in Scotland.
The Sunbeam's development was funded by a British government grant with the aim to keep the Linwood plant running, and the small car was based on the larger Hillman Avenger also manufactured there.
The Sunbeam Lotus was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in April 1979, but the road-going version of the rally car was not actually ready for deliveries to the public until after the rebranding, and thus became the Talbot Sunbeam Lotus.
