Sunbeam was a marque registered by John Marston Co. Ltd of Wolverhampton, England in 1888.
In 1905, the Sunbeam Motorcar Company Ltd was formed separate from the rest of the John Marston business which retained the Sunbeam motorcycles and bicycles.
Sunbeam cars powered by more conventional (for the time) side-valve engines featured prominently in the 1911 Coupe de l'Auto race, and improved versions won first, second and third the next year.

Following in the tradition of their bicycles, the motorcycles were of high-quality, usually with a single cylinder, and known as the "Gentleman's Machine." Sunbeam motorcycles performed well in the early days of the famous TT (Tourist Trophy) races in the Isle of Man.
Three Sunbeam motorcycle models were produced from 1946 to 1956, not in the main BSA factory at Small Heath, Birmingham, but in Redditch, Worcestershire.
The new Sunbeam motorcycles were of an entirely new design inspired by BMW German army motorcycles captured in WWII.

The Sunbeam name was registered by John Marston in 1888 (born 1836) after he decided to enter into the booming new bicycle industry.
Sunbeam Motorcycles production began production in 1911/1912 and by 1914 Sunbeam Motorcycles who's image of high quality finish and superb engineering were being used for racing, almost winning the first TT they entered.
The motorcycle that was designed instead shared the shaft drive of the BMW and the heavy wheels and forks but instead of a flat twin apposed across the frame layout, a new in-line (with the frame) OHC, parallel twin was designed with a top speed in excess of 90 mph.

Sunbeam machines were several times more expensive than some of the competition and in order to secure sales the emphasis on quality was essential.
At the outbreak of World War One, Sunbeam and other manufacturers were put on limited war production by the Government and 'The Military Sunbeam' was made in large numbers for the French Government and sold in smaller quantities here.
In 1937 the cycle and motorcycle business was purchased by Associated motorcycles, who moved manufacturing to their works at Plumstead in North London.

The Sunbeam Owners Fellowship is a worldwide group open to all who enthuse and taking pride in a special old British motorcycle.
The Sunbeam name was used on motorcycles before the S7 and S8 (see potted history), and BSA were the manufacturer for these post-war 'beams, yet their groups and clubs do not really provide a home for bikes of this marque.
There are still many Sunbeams ridden in the 21st century, almost 60 years after production started and the Fellowship acts as a focus for new thoughts and ideas about the bikes.
