Topic: Suncoast High School

Suncoast Community High School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Suncoast High's first year was marred by major riots that received national media coverage, with law enforcement using tear gas and helicopters to break up rock-throwing and fights between mobs of fl and white students.
Racial tensions remained high at the school over the next several years, and while there were no more riots on the scale of 1970-71, there was a gradual exodus of white students from Suncoast High as their families either enrolled them in private or parochial schools, or moved.
Suncoast's history of academic success and of a motivated and talented student body is often attributed to Carnes' intial ability (granted to her by the Palm Beach County School District) to choose her own faculty from schools around the county.

Tampabay: High schools' start: 7:05 a.m.
Caught in the dreaded "third tier" for yet another year were middle schoolers whose parents complained that the late start leaves their children weary in the late afternoon and unwatched in the morning when adults must leave home for jobs.
In one sense, the vote was a victory for high school students, said Carla Webster, a theater arts teacher at Palm Harbor University High who had cautioned the board against the 9:55 a.m.
School officials told parents from the four elementary schools still mired in the third tier that they will work to get them an earlier start time by late summer, but they offered no promises.

According to the Palm Beach Post, Suncoast coach Jimmie Bell said Jim Tressel and recruiting coordinator Bill Conley told him on Jan. 21 that Ohio State's screening committee determined Morgan couldn't be offered a scholarship because he is not ranked in the top 50 percent of his graduating class.
The only problem with that explanation is Suncoast is an academic magnet academy, and Morgan carries a 3.25 GPA, according to school administrators.
Such a scenario is usually taboo for any school in recruiting circles because of the long-range credibility ramifications triggered by such a practice.
