The Jakarta Post - The Journal of Indonesia Today
According to Chaedar Alwasilah, dean of the School of Language and Art at the Indonesian Educational University, Bandung, there are about 30 million Sundanese people in Indonesia but only a few believe that reading print media in the Sundanese language is important for the preservation of Sundanese culture.
The decline in the number of readers, Chaedar said, is attributable to the fact that many Sundanese people are nowadays less likely to use their own language and follow traditional aspects of their culture.
In the regions, this policy went unopposed and the Indonesian language was used as the mandatory medium of instruction in schools.
