  Sunday Bloody Sunday
The conservatives felt that the film's amoral, non-judgmental approach, as exemplified by its treatment of the two relationships as precisely equivalent, was morally reprehensible.
The film was was otherwise unmemorable, and would have died a quiet death if every shot had been exactly the same, and every word of dialogue had been exactly the same, but the two old ladies had both been ladies.
Sunday Bloody Sunday is a meditational character study, and it’s a brilliantly intelligent and melancholy film, but there’s something missing in the momentum department, and the meandering branch-off structure of the second act makes the last half hour a bit of an endurance test.

Tucson Weekly: Sunday, Bloody Sunday (October 31 - November 6, 2002)
Bloody Sunday is a disturbing, dramatically intense, and expertly photographed retelling of the events of January 30, 1972, in Derry, Northern Ireland.
The naturalness of the film causes the deaths of the unnamed victims to carry more weight than a two-hour crying scene by Julia Roberts in an American melodrama, and we're spared the speechifying and sappy music that most Hollywood films use to yank your emotional chain.
Bloody Sunday is a bit slow to build, and the initial scenes are hard to understand due to the heavy Irish accents, but it's definitely worthwhile.

Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971) - A Review by David Nusair
Sunday Bloody Sunday is almost a prototypical '70s movie - it's a slow and meandering character study of three individuals that aren't all that interesting.
If the film had been content to be about that, and excised the myriad of extraneous plot threads, Sunday Bloody Sunday probably would've been a lot more entertaining.
Sunday Bloody Sunday should be applauded for refusing to dumb down the material to appeal to younger viewers, but the film's '70s excess prevents it from ever becoming anything more than a time-capsule curiosity.

I have seen "Bloody Sunday" twice now - once on the big screen and once on DVD - and read Don Mullen's book, "Eyewitness Bloody Sunday." This movie is a very realistic depiction of the defining moment of the "troubles" in Northern Ireland.
The film jumps so frequently from scene to scene that at times it is distracting, though I was much less annoyed by this the second time around.

"Bloody Sunday" is neither a fictionalized account nor a documentary of that fateful day; the events that transpired are reconstructed in real time, lending the film an authenticity in its detachment to a particular perspective.
Using hand-held cameras and drab hues throughout (replicating old BBC news footage), the film volleys its focus between both sides of the standoff, in some cases using relatives of actual victims and former soldiers to portray the marchers and the British paratroopers who gunned them down.
The film opens with Cooper announcing plans for a peaceful march—both to protest the British policy of internment without trial, which was installed the previous summer, and to demand decent public housing for poor Catholics.

The film's details are rich yet subtle (a local theater in Derry plays two films: The Magnificent Seven and Sunday Bloody Sunday) and the sense of dread is overwhelming.
The film's ultra-realism echoes Michael Winterbottom's polemical Welcome to Sarajevo except Greengrass wrings more naturalistic performances from his actors; as Protestant peacekeeper Ivan Cooper, a brilliant James Nesbitt is every bit as frazzled by constantly buzzing phone-lines as he is by the bullets that kill his countrymen.

Jim's Reviews - Sunday Bloody Sunday
Although the film does not reflect my personal experience (whew!), I like how it opens me to three complex, fascinating and very real individuals, even as it uses all of the resources of cinema – an extraordinarily rich interplay of drama, image and sound – to dig beneath the surface of their lives.
But in a film this emotionally, and thematically, rich, there are always several "however's" – so, however: part of the appeal of America for Bob is it's promise of new experiences that are artistic, financial, and perhaps amatory.
Alex (with her non-gender-specific name) is the fiery heart of this film, as she moves from quiet desperation to intense reflectiveness (which Schlesinger visualizes brilliantly, as we will see a bit later) to delightfully scathing wit.

Sunday Bloody Sunday Movie: Sunday Bloody Sunday DVD is available from Bestprices.com
Directed by John Schlesinger, SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY is a sociologically astute drama about the bisexual love triangle between three characters navigating the changing mores of the early-1970s sexual revolution.
Considered groundbreaking for its frank depiction of homosexuality (as well as featuring one of the first onscreen same-sex kisses), the film's nonjudgmental approach to its characters' seething loneliness is shaped by Penelope Gilliatt's intelligent script, Schlesinger's fluid direction, and the disarmingly honest performances of its two leads.
SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY deftly straddles the line between character study and social commentary, offering mature drama that is both specific to its era and disconcertingly prescient.
