Sunday Times University of the Year - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sunday Times University of the Year is an annual award given to a British university by The Sunday Times.
Though the guide contains a league table of UK universities compiled from various statistics, the award is not necessarily given to the university at the top (in fact, it never has been).
Instead, a university is chosen by a panel of experts based on all round academic excellence.

Durham University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The University was named Sunday Times University of the Year in 2005, having previously been shortlisted for the award in 2004.
In 1992 a joint venture between the University and the University of Teesside saw the Joint University College on Teesside of the Universities of Durham and Teesside (JUCOT) established at Stockton-on-Tees, 23 miles south of Durham.

Sunday Times University of the Year - Newcastle University
The University of Newcastle upon Tyne is the Sunday Times university of the year.
It is crowned by the university's designation as the learning and teaching support centre for all UK medical schools, to disseminate best teaching practice - in a year when a surprising number of university medical schools have missed out on the highest teaching ratings, signalling excellence under our criteria.
A telling measurement of university efficiency and a comment on the student population and experience, it is wrong to dismiss high dropout rates as an inevitable consequence of widening access.

The Sunday Times University Guide   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The Sunday Times university league table is the first to include the new student satisfaction ratings; it also takes account of the views of head teachers from Britain's leading state and independent schools expressed in an exclusive survey.
The Sunday Times University Guide 2005 was compiled using data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (Hesa), the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, the national funding councils and the 119 institutions themselves.
Universities were ranked on the number of citations they received from heads, taking into account the number of subjects offered so that smaller specialist institutions were not disadvantaged by their more limited range of subjects.

Sunday Times League Table 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
This year's table uses the same seven criteria as previously (although the employment indicator has now been split into 2 parts), each of which is allocated the same arbitrary weighting as in previous years.
Last year's change, to exclude assessment scores from before 1995, with the aim of ensuring scores are reflective of current teaching quality, resulted in a 'closing up' of performance such that there is less variation between the performance of old and new Universities.
However, it is still the case that the Sunday Times is attempting to produce a single measure from a number of different TQA schemes, run at different times, and for differing periods of time, in each of the constituent UK countries.
