The name Sunderbans is perhaps derived from the term meaning 'the forest of sundari' (Heritiera fomes), a reference to the large mangrove tree that provides valuable fuel.
Situated at the mouth of the Ganges, Sunderbans spreads over 54 islands and two countries (the West Bengal state in India and Bangladesh) and is a part of the world's largest delta region.
Tigers - Sunderbans is the largest estuarine delta in the world and the biggest colony of the Royal Bengal Tigers.

The Sunderbans, spread over India and the southern tip of Bangladesh, is a protected ecosystem dotted with mangrove forests and criss-crossed by creeks and tributaries of rivers flowing into the Bay of Bengal.
While in 1989, it was 353, the figure came down to 335 during the 1993 census, rose to 361 during 1997 and came down to 280 - 103 male, 144 female and 33 cubs, in 2002.

Kolkata, The latest tiger census in the world's largest mangrove forest in the Sunderbans delta in eastern India indicates that the big cat population is stable, an official said Wednesday.
In the last tiger census in Sunderbans in 2001, surveyors collected 760 pugmarks that, after analysis, showed there were 271 tigers in the forest.
Although the greater part of the Sunderbans jungle falls in Bangladesh, the Indian half, consisting of 53 islands, is believed to be home to most of the tigers because of sweet water sources there.
