The Empire boats would be little more than a footnote in aviation history except for the fact that this family of aircraft included a military type, the "S.25" or "Sunderland", which would become one of the most famous flying boats ever built.
Of course, the Sunderland was not a luxury liner like the Empire boats, but it had a number of niceties useful for keeping its crew of seven in comfortable during long and exhausting ocean patrols and operations from remote locations, such as six bunks and a galley with a stove.

Male impersonator Vesta Tilley was one of the biggest stars in the country when she opened the Empire, but her involvement began even earlier when she laid the foundation stone.
In the late 1950's the Empire fell on hard times and closed briefly, but it was taken over by Sunderland Council, and under this new ownership was reopened on Boxing Day 1959 with a pantomime.
The Empire Theatre is the last of Sunderland's Theatres to survive and is the main venue for live entertainment in the city today.
