Neighboring municipalities are Augustenborg to the southeast, and Sundeved and Sønderborg to the south, albeit separated from the island municipality by Als Fjord, the waterway which separates the island of Als from the Jutland mainland.
Ferry service connects the municipality at the town of Hardeshøj with Sundeved municipality at the town of Ballebro.
Sundeved is a municipality in South Jutland County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark.
The municipality covers an area of 69 km², and has a total population of 5,298 (2005).
By January 1, 2007Sundeved municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007).

The withdrawal was dictated by the position of the important parts of the Danish country.
The Danes wanted to protect the Northern part of Jutland, and at the same time they wanted to defend Als with its bridgehead at Sundeved, and the island of Funen with its bridgehead at Fredericia.

In 1564 the estate became the property of Duke Hans the Younger (1545-1622), when his brother Frederik II transferred ownership of a third of the royal duchies to him - an area which included Ærø, Als, and Sundeved in the Duchy of Schleswig.
The Duke left his mark on the landscape, commissioning the building of a dam -which exists to this very day - in a cove of Alssund.
The king gave him permission to create an entailed estate incorporating Sandbjerg and his other possessions in Sundeved under the name of the Reventlow-Sandbjerg Estate.
