	sffworld.com - Sundiver by David Brin
		Sundiver was much different than the rest of the series with it being kind of a murder mystery, but it was a good 'primer' for things to come.
		Sundiver was the worst of the lot for me. Perhaps it was because I only read it after Startide Rising and The Uplift War (couldn't track it down before that) and thus had been conditioned to expect more.
		As far as I know Sundiver was Brin's first book and as such not bad, but the only real reason to read it is still that it's part of the Uplift series.

		In chronological order within the novels, these are: Sundiver, Startide Rising, The Uplift War, Brightness Reef, Infinity's Shore, and Heaven's Reach (on a side note, I love his titles, and the poetry in the books that they come from).
		The first, Sundiver, is written in the early stages after humanity learns they're not alone, and involves Jacob Demwa, a man who was working with the dolphin uplift project, being brought in on a solar research project where manned spacecraft are sent into the sun to collect information.
		The essential difference between the two is that Sundiver is about a mentally skewed person trying to cope with a universe into which he doesn't quite fit, and Startide Rising is about that universe.

	David Brin: Sundiver
		It is an interesting development of the idea to come up with an entire galactic culture based on Uplift, using humanity's anomalous status to motivate this and the other novels which follow it.
		The story of Sundiver is fairly typical of hard science fiction, about manned travel into the interior of the sun, where strange creatures are encountered which are unknown even to the superior science of the galactics.
		The hard science component, while interesting, is comparatively unimportant; Sundiver is really about the different personalities, human and alien, involved in the project.

		Jacob and Helene might be in the main survey party, but I'm only writing about the small branch exploration that goes to the other side of the planet.
